I took a trip down to the Keys last weekend...after sailing around at Whale Harbor (about MM 90) I decided to sail out to a white stilt lighthouse 3-4 miles offshore...found some messy head high waves in 5.4 conditions. The waves had a nice angle to them so I could do more than just backside turns but it was B&J conditons. Has anyone else scored waves on the reefs there?

I ended up snapping a mast and a batten on the reef and paddled it for a while (balancing on a pile of gear) before being picked up by a fisherman. The prospect of paddling several miles in sideshore swells has me reconsidering another solo trip.

I loved sailing down there. Used to live in KeyWest. There is not too much as far as true wave sailing goes. But like you found you do get wind swell generated reef breaks. It is a little less stressfull sailing in the backcountry on the northside as the water is mostly less than 6 or 8 ft you can almost walk back if you had to. Also when it is really windy the northly will blow back to the island as opposed to offshore heading for Cuba.
