We are flying into Boston and driving to cooperstown. Is there a place upstate to sail? A place to rent gear? We will be near Albany, ny. Should we just play baseball or are there viable sailing options?

Thanks

Sounds like baseball and beer drinking to me.

I grew up in that neck of the woods. Trust me, there is plenty of water. Whether you'll want to go windsurfing depends on what time of year and conditions you like. Summertime is most likely longboard cruising with the occasional windy day. Fall can be crazy windy up there.

Check out the Adirondack Boardsailing Club for more info, including a huge list of launch sites:

I'm not sure about rental shops, but the ABCers are super cool people, and I'm sure someone would lend or rent you a rig if conditions were appropriate. And you may wish to go through the hassle of flying with your own gear if you go in the fall, 'cause I'm telling you, it freaking cranks...

20+ years ago, I used to frequently sail Otsego Lake and nearby Lake Canadarago. Otsego is a long narrow lake with a nice state park/campground at the north end. Half way up the west side there is a small point of land with free access. It is about a mile wide at mid lake. The venturi can help. S, SW and N winds can all be good. W and E winds suck.
The link to the ABC in the earlier post will connect you with a fine group of folks who are always quick to help and can connect with venues closer to the Albany area. I know of no rentals in the region. Good luck. RC
