AaronWright used to have a windsurf shop at the southern end of LindaMar, up the hill a ways, carrying only glass wave boards and sails smaller than 5.5 meters. He sailed there lots then, was a former 4A surfer, but moved out maybe in '83.
I started sailing there around '84, maybe 30 days a year, but conditions with sideshore winds only happen maybe 4 days a year. All those rainy SE winds are worth little, as it's holey and unreliable at best. Floaty wave boards for sure stuff.
Problem is the cliffs both N and S, so winds tend to be 45 degrees cross offshore.....fine at organized points, but too gusty for the rewards.
But maybe the best first alternative during S winds if you're afraid of OB, SharpPark, Stinson.....

Is it common for there to be wind at Linda Mar?
I sailed Ocean Beach a couple years ago on a 5.3 then went down the coast and it was totally glassy at Linda Mar.

Linda Mar is a fickle animal for sure. Best when we get the southerly surge after a heat wave. Fog will race up the coast from Santa Barbara
and hit the Montara Mountain Range and go off shore creating a "Halo"effect, coming back on shore at Daly City or Ocean Beach. This can last 1-2 days or sometimes a whole week. Best wind occours when the fog is cresting the MM range. A floaty board is best and it is gusty and holey. However if you are jonesing for some action and the coast and Crissy are socked in, it can be a sweet treat. Sharp Park Beach can also fire , but because the wind is side on, the kites have better luck.
Look at the 1 k satellite for guidence or http://paragliding-lessons.com/Pacifica_Wind.htm

As said, LM is sailible on S winds day, including all the rainy days in the winter. Surfer's don't like you at all.
NW clear days, since LM faces slightly NW, will be straight onshore, very similar to OB, but the swell hits directly there, and it's a 1000yard closeout shore to shore most days since NW winds bring NW shortperiod windswell.
Good spot for the experts who can handle the mixed conditions and are willing to get skunked on lotsa good looking days.
Dav, Scott, Wads, and Gazos much more reliable on NW days.
Pomp, SanG, Sharp, OB, Stinson much more chance of real surfsailing on S days.
Some of HMB's guys used to sail SnoWhite, KellySt., and slightly N near Cowboy's shop on S winds. I haven't heard too much about it, as most of them went back to surfing by '90's.
HMB at the jetty is sailed only inside the flat water harbor, making the HMaster pull out his hair. At the beginner surf beach, S winds make it pure backwash hell, and NW winds don't come down until the S dirt parking lot, but it's normally a closeout shorepound.
Jeff's house fills in great with wind, but closeout shorepound making surfsailing unrealistic, and nice climb down to the beach.
