If you are at all planning to eat at Jacques in Paia on Maui, the next few days are the right time. Poor business has caused a temporary loss of his liquor license so you can get a bottle of wine across the street very reasonable and bring it in. If we don't eat there THIS week he will be forced out of business from lack of revenue from liquor sales.
It isn't easy to sell great French food at reasonable prices in these times. He is a top sailor who has supported the windsurfing life on the North Shore for a long time. Sushi is good there too. He knows what good food is supposed to taste like.
This is the sailor who built a rig to take a guy in a wheelchair out windsurfing. Expensive project but he feels it was worth every dime. |

I wish I were on Maui to help out with Jacque's. I have some very pleasant memories (mid-to late 90's, early 00's) of sailing all day then partying at night at Jacque's (at its old location). Everybody congregated there, and on Friday nights, it always seemed to have a really fun, house-party like atmosphere, with Jacque being an always smiling, always gracious host. There was just a unique vibe to the place, at least in those days, and it was exciting to be able to meet people from every corner of the world, be they 20 something hotties from Sweden or Brazil, to the legends of the day, like Polakow, Dunkerbeck, etc... The unique vibe was the energy of a bunch of young, fit, really attractive people, all with a similar passion for the ocean, surfing and windsurfing. (kiting was in its infancy back then)
I hope the place sticks around... |

My wife and I will get over there this weekend. Jacque is a great guy. Although I just moved here recently, I met Jacque probably twenty years ago during one of my visits. He's such a nice person that although he didn't always remember my name when I'd run into him at the restaurant or on the beach - he always went out of his way to stand and chat for a bit.
Long live Jacques! |

Jacque is a really good guy-I certainly hope he does alright. He carries some of the most board speed of anyone out there. Robbie and all the demo, R&D folks have him check out anything new for his input. He can't beat Phil Mcgain only because Phil carries more speed through the gybe. GOOD LUCK to one of our best. Tough times. |

Now I am feeling bad about going to the Turks and Caicos this summer instead of the usual trip to Maui. Would love to help give Jacque a boost. Paia is such a cool place. |
