Hey Wyatt,
The Friday night races are at St. Francis Yacht Club and are run every other week. The next one is on April 30th. Check out the schedule for all the dates. The races are formula course races from in front of the club up around Anita Rock and then downwind around the buoy to the east of the YC. Usually they get off about 3 races in an evening. Not sure about an entrance fee or not. |

Wyatt,
$15 per race or $125 for the season. There are 13 races for the season.

That formula racing stuff looks like a real blast. Do they have any "sail whatever board you got" races too. Someday I want to be able to ride my board that well in the bay. What about Friday night parking ? Does everyone just meet in Vallejo or Larkspur and sail up to the Yacht club ? I wish we had something like this at your place coach. Is the Aquatic Center ever going to put up a wind/weather station with a web cam ? They must have spent a jillion billion dollars building the center and then came up $179.99 short for a decent web cam and wind weather monitor? They could use one percent of the class proceeds to buy one in less than two days and put it up on the roof!? It would be a useful feature on their website and a fraction of the cost of just one of those 25 sailboats they teach folks how to sail in IMHO

Clyde,
I've been pushing on that for some years now, but I guess I just need to push harder. The best alternative right now is the Matherfield sensor. Not great, but pretty good. You can access it here on the Wind & Forecast tab. I also want them to put up one of the weighted wind direction/wind speed flags on top of the large building.
As for a racing series, I guess if I got off my but and added one more project to my list we could get one going. It would surely be longboard racing but we obviously have the buoys & start boats for it.

Looks like Im not saying anything new, there just does not seem to be much in our area to polarize groups of the more experienced windsurfing locals. There is the delta but thats a fair drive with traffic ,strong winds, tides and long commute times not really what I would consider afterwork type "local". Folsom is big enough but lots of boat traffic and a bit farther off close freeway access. The center just makes more sense locally than anywhere else especially from an organization standpoint. ASI seems to hold a ton of events and probably has all the necessary equipment etc etc. No pressure on you though to pull it all off..enough interest , preparation and participation needs to be there in the whole sailing community. Just kicking it out here because driving to the bay area from here and back for a Friday night event after work seems..remote at best. 15/20 minutes from downtown to ASI is much easier to picture . |
