Below is an animation of the upper Cut-Off Low at about 18K feet that is currently crashing over the far Northern California coast. Note it's counter-clockwise spinning winds. By dawn Wednesday it should be over the Gorge. If this low behaves it will:

1. Bring an abrupt end to the heat wave and bring clouds to the Gorge.
2. Transfer some momentum to the surface winds producing powerful gusts.
3. Enhance the overall pressure gradient.
4. And, as it evolves into an upper trough and departs eastward it will allow the North Pacific High to move closer to the coast further enhancing the pressure gradient.

Cut-Off Lows are notoriously unpredictable so this whole scenario may not play out exactly on time. Sure glad I am not a Gorge forecaster.

Watch the Swell wind graph page tomorrow starting at dawn as I do bluff reports.

If the predicted thunderstorms are anywhere near the gorge the wind could get flucky.

Hey Mike (the real Mike, not isobars) - can you delay that big bad boy spinning around out there for a couple of days? I am busy until Friday. Out looking for a good deal on a new lawn chair.

Spennie might not have complained if he had sailed where I was today..... wind averaging 32 gusting to 33. However, later in the day it turned to 32 gusting to 35..... WAY, WAY too gusty for Spinnie and folks who sail Rio Vista.

You don't need to disrespect the sailors at Rio Vista just because of what one guy (Spennie) posted. There is a whole bunch of us who would love to be up at the Gorge! And can handle gusty conditions when they a put in front of us. Bring it on! I just wish we had massive current every day like you guys.

Hmmm I was in the Gorge from July 9th till August 9th and sailed 25 out of 28 days, and lost a day due to injury.....

But you are right, Sherman has really rocked this year....
