after many years of windsurfing i am now wearing a helmet. it took a nasty gash on my forehead to convince me. i thought i would just wear it until i healed. two days later another clunk on the noggin with no effects convinced me. also, the old gath helmet is darn comfortable.

I have noticed that snowboarding has gone helmet chic. I wear a helmet for everything mountain biking, windsurfing, snowboarding. I just think it is unacceptable to end up with a brain injury doing something you love doing. But the main reason I wear a helmet sailing is sun protection. Bald, old, and in the sun, needs serious protection. Who knows the more of us that wear helmets may make the windsurfing helmet as chic as the snowboarding helmet.

I agree, got to keep the sun off your head anyhow, might as well wear something that also protects the noggin. I upgraded to a Gath helmet a couple years ago - so light and comfortable you almost forget you have it on.

One of my co workers got knocked out while windsurfing years ago at the event site - no helmet. I am happy he did not drown.
I see this as a freedom thing - I would not make any rules about it, but I will always wear one, and my kids will wear them too!

Hmm, "you won't make any rules", but aren't you making one by requiring your kids to wear one???

Another good reason to stay away from the Event Site.

It’s possible that the helmet wearers can’t' here as well or react as fast when in tight company. Their peripheral vision can be distorted and the 6th sense diminished by the helmet. Also affecting the senses, is wind contact and suppression of the spirit...i.e.… the feeling of freedom when I’m ridding. But I hear ya; if I sustained a nasty injury, it may make me think real well. May everyone be safe? P.S. > Surfers don't where helmets. Yeah I know; all the gear, wind, ECT....but surfing is way gnarly ya know?
