Britain's offshore windpower costs twice as much as coal and gas generated electricity
Off shore wind farms cost twice as much to produce electricity as gas and coal powered stations and will need subsidies for at least 20 years, a major report warns.

Data from the world's largest offshore wind operations.

mr G , you are my favorite provocateur. Solar is ramping fast, companies are finally making big bux off the enterprise(FSLR, etc.), and it took many years. I think wind might work someday, financially, but to give up and revert back to stone ages where men die at 50 in coal mines, would be a mistake. Massive Chinese off shore wind rigs to be built in the Pacific will yield better ROI than the English wind farms, but right now its a big loser, look at the shares of VESTAS. Hopefully the geniuses in Silicon Valley are not dissuaded by the reports' prognostication.

The world of the politically possible at dysfunction. The deniers have attacked even the smallest carbon fees as economy killers, ignoring the externalities of burning coal and petroleum, and transfering those costs to the public at large. Oil producers in America have successfully fought off not just small carbon fees, but loss of their subsidies. So the political response has been to subsidize other power generating mechanisms. Might make sense to create technology, but I would agree with the Reason Foundation that the market makes better decisions in directing resources than the political system. Unfortunately, the carbon industry has managed to stalemate most everything.

Good timing by mrgybe though--posted the same day that Los Angeles reaches the highest temperature ever. Like the cold summer in the Bay area, that is weather, not climate, and it doesn't prove or disprove global warming. I just enjoy the irony from a denier.

I don't have a/c at my house, but I could have used it for the last 2 days. This was the coldest summer in 50 years down here. I needed the heat for 10 minutes in the morning almost every day. Now that summer is over, we finally got hot for 2 days. The ocean 300 yards from my house was 54-56 all summer. With a steady onshore breeze every night, it was like living in Berkeley. (without all the beggars) Laughing

They are finding stuff in North Europe from 3000 years ago, like an old shoe. It is appearing faster than they can collect and preserve it as the Artic ice melts.
'--This is only the third time in the satellite record that ice extent has fallen below five million square kilometers (1.93 million square miles), and all those occurrences have been within the past four years," the report said."

Bard should move up there for some warm weather since it is so cold at his house

All that proves is that it is the same temperature now, as it was 3000 years ago. The iceman 6000 years ago surfaced about 10? years ago in about the same spot he died at. Very interesting read, and also proves we were about the same temp then as now. He was wearing light clothes as he was walking across and ice field. One of the oldest murder mysteries known to man.

For those who pay attention to data, see http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/reportcard/. Record low snow levels for the summer, sea ice well below levels of 1980's and 1990's. Sources are credible, Robert Corell, Zimov--people doing research in the arctic.

Isobars source? Lord Chrisopher Monckton, 3rd Viscount of Brenchley. Is he a scientist? No, a journalist and economist--but hey, there's an ist at the end of his title. Does he know science? Well, take a look at what he says about AIDS and other whacky things here: http://www.desmogblog.com/christopher-monckton

The response of the Rand Paul's? The same as Iso's. Censor them. Is this a great country or what.

Meanwhile it is freezing all over the Northern Hemisphere. This seems to happen every winter.

Don't worry Mac, it's gonna get even colder, and the snow will fall again.

That's why when considering travel to faraway locations we give great consideration to the local climate but are surprised upon arrival to experience only weather. Yes, we will see snow at Big Bear this year to be sure. We also will see the glaciers of Himalaya melting faster than ever, despite the local kids receiving quite few snow days.

Windsurfing is a game of balance. So is our planet. Change DH tension and the OH suddenly feels a bit off. A glacier melts and migratory birds no longer visit. OK if you are a mosquito, not so great if you are a local tree or bush.
