I just started windsurfing in the area, leaving in Manhattan and I was wondering where I should go if the current forecast for Sunday become true...
Thanks

Plum(b) beach, Brooklyn can be really good on a SE wind. Mike J |

In the future, if you have any interest in waves for those directions, the spots would be Ponquogue and/or The Bowl. _________________ Michael

Fred, in addition to Plumb Beach, you may want to consider
Great Kills Park on SI, but check to make sure
that they are open as they had a
fire there recently and closed the park as a result.
There are other parks on SI, such as Wolfe Pond
and Lemon Creek, but strictly speaking,
rules for NYC parks forbid the launching of a windsurfer.
These rules do not apply to Fed parks.
Also check the launch finder on WindsurfResource.com.
This website documents NYC/Raritan Bay Launches and points
south, such as Coastal NJ Launches, Pennsylvania Launches,
Delmarva Peninsula Launches, Chesapeake Bay Launches,
Southern Maryland Launches, Washington DC Area Launches,
mid-Virginia Launches , Tidewater Virginia Launches
and Hatteras Area Launches, where one can interact with an
interactive graphical map to find a suitable launch while
referring to other compilations for points N and E of NYC.

Speaking of Staten Island, I used to sail out of Miller Field, at the end of New Dorp Lane. Faces SW, so good on anything between SW and NE. Same wind as Gateway to the S, but has a grassy rigging area and you're closer to the water. On a S wind, you could sail right across to Breezy Point, which would be pretty fun. |

In response to Scargo's comment, I checked into the matter regarding Miller Field,
and the answer is No. I called William Tate at 718.351.6970, and he stated that
you may launch a windsurfer from Great Kills Park, and unlike Plumb Beach, no
permit is required. However, he also said that you are not allowed to launch a
windsurfer from Miller Field, including New Drop Lane. Consequently, the only
places you may legally launch from within NYC are Plumb Beach in Brooklyn
(hand-carry permit required) and Great Kills Park in SI (no permit required).
This is because Rule 2-06 (g) and (i) of the NYC Parks and Recreation Dept forbid
the launching of a windsurfer from NYC parks. It is also noted that this prohibition
against windsurf launching from NYC parks may be overcome if there is a showing
of interest, starting by writing a letter to the NYC Park Commissioner
Adrian Benepe. Other special interest groups, such as kayak users and canoe
users, have in the past been successful in pushing back against the system
and carving out an exception for their sport.

Matt, thanks for the clarification. I had no idea I was, que Judas Priest, breakin' the law.
On this forum, people have discussed launching from Liberty State Park, specifically the southern part where the picnic areas are. Any idea whether it's legal? Also, I heard that the state is working on reclamating that peninsula just north of the Morris Canal in Jersey City, including adding a launch site for kayaks & canoes. If that's the case, I wouldn't think they could exclude sailers. It could provide some nice sailing on N or S directions (but not much else because of all the buildings). |
