I think everyone who windsurfs, surfs, sails, skis, snowboards, etc... has seen or heard about the GoPro camera. This topic is not about the GoPro but I will say the GoPro is easy to use and the picture quality is truly HD. There is also a new screen you can attach to the back to use as a view finder. With all of the great waterproof camera setups now available the new problem is finding the best way to mount them on our rigs and gear.

What I am interested in is how people have been able to use some of the new cameras windsurfing. We all seem to be armature engineers in windsurfing and many of us have come up with ways to attach cameras to our booms: both at the front and near clew. I have not been able to use my camera for windsurfing yet but would like to hear how some people have attached cameras to their rigs before I give it a try.

There are also some mounts that have been developed. Specifically the flymount: http://www.flymount.com/. The flymount appears to be originally developed in order to attach a camera to a windsurfing mast without damaging the sail and has since been used for many other applications and praised by windsurfing magazines. There is a GoPro compatible version that was supposed to come out by now but I can't find it anywhere. There also appears to be no retailers of the flymount in the US. Has anyone tried it or found a place to purchase it? It is available on the website but its a little sketchy.

I have a MauiSails sails boom that I mostly use and have heard you can use the vented helmet strap to attach the GoPro to the boom but I can't get it to really stay where I want it.

Hopefully we will all be sharing awesome shots of our sessions this year:

Haven't had a chance to use it on a boom yet, but the handlebar mount works easily on a paddle shaft. The wrist mount will probably work on the center strut of a kite (to be tested soon.) GoPro's website says leading edge, but center strut's the spot.

How about on the helmet, especially on the integral visor of a batting helmet? That way we can actually aim the camera where we want, real time. Its 170 degree view should compensate pretty well for poor aim ... a problem many guys have anyway ... and with a little (camera) practice our aim should get plenty good enough. That also lets us record other sailors who don't manage to pull off their best moves -- and crashes -- in the view of a fixed camera.

Here are a couple of pics of boom end attachment with the helmet strap and the handlebar attachment on the boom arm. Whatever mount you use, be sure to tether the cam in some way...just in case. They go directly to the bottom if they get loose. Wink

Best boom's eye view video from James Douglass can be seen on the US Windsurfing site here...http://www.uswindsurfing.org/?p=540

Handlebar mount works well for pictures of you while sailing (pick your side unless you have two cameras), and a handlebar mount will also work on the clew end of the boom. A handlebar mount will also work on the mast (if a skinny) if the mast sticks beyond the top of the sail. I use a helmet mount or headstrap for shots looking forward.

Thanks for all of the feedback the handlebar mount is a great option for only $20. I wasn't sure if windsurfing booms were too large a diameter for the mount. The shots from the clew are also nice, putting the camera over the boom or under gives a totally different perspective. Here is a post with some nice wave riding shots from under the boom this past weekend.

I know this post was started yesterday but it sounds like no one in the states has been able to get their hands on the flymount or are satisfied with what they already have.

Some of the shots from kites are really good. I have even seen video from a kite that was actually a better shot of a windsurfer ridding the wave behind the kiter. I don't currently kite but am making a trip to Hatteras before the summer to try and get my girlfriend into kitting and get some gear while I am down there.

I use this mount for Boom and Mast cam on my Contour 1080. It's a very
solid mount and much sturdier than the Go-Pro mounts. Not nearly as
handy though. http://www.amazon.com/UNIVERSAL-CAMERA-HOLDER-MOTORCYCLE-HANDLEBAR/dp/B001IV2RGU/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1298996001&sr=8-10-spell

I've got mine on order. They have a message on there saying they're out of stock but I think that's an old message. They list 196 in stock so if you prepaid like I did they should be shipping soon. The Paypal will convert from Euros to US dollars for you. They also cut me a deal. They gave me the GoPro Adapter for no extra charge. I said I didn't need the universal one so they'll keep that part in trade for the GoPro adapter. Oh how I love NEW TOYS! Cool

Wow that's really cool! I haven't heard of this one. Probably not a good setup if you wanted to duck jibe though.
