The real additional hazard this year is the fast current which pulls the nets below the water surface and makes them invisible. Plus, as mentioned earlier, if you become entangled in the net - you will likely be pulled down also. Scary and life-threatening.

Hey, I'm all for the native Americans having their fishing and hunting rights - but how about using some (un)common sense in the interest of public safety and sharing the Big River with all!

Will it take a fatality before this issue is addressed by the "Authorities"?

Meanwhile, lets' all check out the location of the nets daily before launching and live to sail another day.

The "authorities" are federal treaties. Windsurfing goes bye-bye before those do.

You got that right Isobars, we complain too much and the Hatch will be closed when the gill nets are out.

Not by a long shot. They are at least as powerful as the RRs, both of which trump every other state and federal legal body from the military to the White House because of treaties. The are the primary reason Arlington is forbidden to build a decent WS launch on Arlington's own property. They get Roosevelt back automatically and irrevocably if the Corps of Engineers decides to give it up (tread lightly out there, folks). They and/or the RRs deny us many excellent launch sites. They alone get to park everything from cars to semis on the lawn and sprinklers at Roosevelt. They and they alone can park and camp and live on almost any government land along the Columbia River while giving federal and state authorities the figurative finger. Their ancestors lost, but the concessions our government gave their lawyers as compensation for the earlier treaties we broke live on today ... justifiably, IMO. We really, REALLY crapped on them after we defeated them. It's biting us in the butt today, and a few of them take every possible advantage of it. Can ya fault them?

That could be a $10,000 knife if you actually use it on a net.

Yeah OK. I'll just drown instead. What a tool.

That ... or avoid the nets in the first place.
If nothing else, simply jerking the board tail up a foot or so as the planing nose passes over the net will often get the fin over the net.

That has not been the case at the Hatchery, there have been at least 3 nets out between the point and the cove at the Hatchery this year for the first time in local history. The problem occurs when the wind dies and people are swimming in between nets with the river current and back eddies pushing them into the nets. The people do not want to abandon their rigs so rigs and person get tangled. You have to see it to understand what is happening. remember that there are lots of novices attempting the hatchery.

Excuse me...I should have said that their ancestors lost...and we gave them plenty of the rights that their offspring have today...actually they are quite lucky to have been given any concessions considering they were conquered...no matter..the nets are a hazard just like barges, pleasure boats, uncontrolled sewage spills, big logs floating down the river, etc...I hope everybody is careful....
I wonder if the U.S. government kicked my ass that I would be allowed a river front launch or casino? Oh wait, they already have kicked my ass...my bad...

Does that give us the right to break the law with impunity? The Prime Directive is "avoid the nets", not "avoid the nets unless they interfere with our desires".

The net problem is clear enough, but the real/practical issue is whether we have any informal influence or legal say in where they deploy their nets. We'd better hope so, lest the small handful of Indians who aggressively oppose our intrusion into "their" world go crazy with their nets.

As for novices at the Hatchery ... Anyone who lacks the skills to handle a venue without encumbering those who can has no business there. Just as I don't do Kodak Point during rush hour nor Ho'okipa anytime, novices have no business clogging up the Hatchery when it's windy. It's dangerous, selfish, and irresponsible even without nets.
