Craftsmen and artists do it for the Art and satisfaction of doing it. Some of the things they create are too nice to use. I would never make a board for that reason. You can buy nice ones for way less than the cost of materials.
Gotta give them credit for trying. |

I have seen several completely wooden cars down to the seats only metal axles and wheels and engine/trans. |

I have enough Cedar strips left over from this canoe to build me a windsurfing board - thinking light-wind 140 liter, hollow, of course, with some laminated ash frames. Should come in at around 20#, if the canoe is any indication

LOVE the sounds hollow boards make at speed! |

Wood is best left for boats, kayaks and chittychittybangbangs. |

Eva, what a beautiful canoe. A lot of hard work went in to that baby.
Love to see the photos of the sailboard when it's done. |

Please find the time Eva. I would love to see what you come up with.
As has been mentioned wood is best left for furniture and boats is probably true, if you want the ultimate performance. However it is about the challenge and satisfaction of creating something a bit unique that looks better and actually does perform as well as most mass produced boards even if a bit heavier. Using WRC the board would be more than 20# for a 140 l board. On my builds using paulownia instead of WRC with 5 mm skins, 4mm ply frame and 6 oz glass the weight worked out at about .9 kilos per 10 litres on boards up to about 80 litres.
Start building soon and please post pictures of the build. |
