2 things if you're interested in tech jobs in Maui (i.e., you do tech and you might want to move to Maui)

1. HELP! I'm helping a friend's really cool web application startup company in Maui that maybe forced to outsource the development of the product to India because he can't find engineers on Maui. The technology is ruby-on-rails, but would consider relevant experience (even a fresh CS/engineering/math grad with some experience writing software).

So by getting the word out to some techies (maybe windsurfers/kiters) that might be interested in moving to Maui (or maybe already there), we might be able to stop this company from sending the work to India. It's not about the money, but more the lack of finding the right people in Maui to get the startup going ASAP. This is an awesome opportunity to work on a silicon valley style funded tech startup that is only a 7 minute drive to Kanaha and a 15 minute drive to Hookipa! Feel free to contact me for more information regarding this opportunity. Remember, there's a tax deduction for travel related to searching for a job, so you could write off this recruiting trip!

Here's the details. Techhui is the community for tech in Maui.

2. We're working on getting a start-up incubator on Maui next year
Check out this posting in TechHui

Aloha,

Justin

Justin,

I'm experienced software engineer and I was watching Maui IT market for while: there is "little" problem with employers on Maui – they don’t want to pay REAL money. They think we would work for bowl of soup and chance to live in paradise. Over years I got few offers from Maui IT companies. All of that offers was laughable! They offer half or sometimes 1/3 of my mainland salary… and then they say “people don’t stay on island”. Of course! Why would you stay, if you can’t survive on that money?

Andrew,

Maybe the startup incubator will address that issue in the sense that engineers will be able to get start-up equity in what they're working on. It's a chicken and egg problem right now. Not enough good local people for the employers, and not enough jobs for more good folks to be out here.

On the other hand, Maui is already showing promise for growing a tech community.

Aloha,

Justin
