Posted: Fri May 25, 2012 5:40 pm Post subject: Slot Box Threads Stripped |
|
|
I have a 2012 tabou da curve. This board has slot boxes. I hit a rock which pulled one of the the fins out of the box. I did not lose the fin and thankfully the boxes look structurally sound but the threads inside the screw hole are now stripped.
I'm specifically looking for suggestions from anyone who has experience fixing this.
Thanks! |

NOT broken any yet, but I have 6 slot box from Cobra , so the same as yours. I have installed 8, and they are sound, the weak part is what you have encountered.
A.Insert a helicoil into the hole, then fit a slightly smaller screw(good luck finding what you want ) same size may work, the screws are very unique but others will do.
B. epoxy the hole then drill out slightly smaller and use the same screw, they are self tap so should work, not be as strong as original but get you back on the water, insert a few strands of carbon//or fiberglass into hole with the epoxy. Since these slot box TOPs are carbon/ resin/ epoxy these would be a semi permanent fix, until next time.
c. Remove slot box and insert self made mini USBox in/6 or 8" at a slight weight gain, but stronger, could also use mini tuttle box.
D. remove slot box, which one is it , front or back ? or center, if center see c above , but 10". _________________ K4 fins

f. You could also drill a new hole more to the inside of the bad one.
g. screw in stainless steel grub screw inserts – with a tiny dribble of epoxy (araldite or any 5min epoxy would do
this similar to #1. _________________ K4 fins

I had the same thing happen. We put a thin layer of resin in the hole and screwed it back in, and let it dry. it's still holding. |

I've used a very simple process for stripped footstrap inserts, described on starboard's website, that should work well for this problem, too. Check it out here, just a little bit down the page under the heading:
Repair of damaged footstrap screw thread or vent screw threads.
http://www.star-board.com/2012/products/asst_repair.php
Hope that helps, let us know how it goes! _________________ formerly known as hodad.andy

Thanks all for the your feedback!
I went ahead and did what seemed like the simplest repair route which was to fill the holes with West System 205 resin, drill out smaller holes and then retap the threads with the original screw. I've only sailed it once, but so far this has worked great.
So I wouldn't have to countersink the holes and since the screws holes angle in towards the fin, the trick for me was to set the board up so the the holes were perfectly vertical before injecting the resin. I used the level app on my phone - never thought I'd really get any use out of that. I taped the hole side of the box and used a syringe to inject the resin leaving about 3/8 inch of space at the top of the hole.
Worked so far - I'll post again if/when this fails. I kind of expect that I'll need to be a bit more invassive at some point. |

I might think a nylon rod inserted//glued in a much larger hole, then drilled out to accept the screw _________________ K4 fins

option B (epoxy, then drill a slightly smaller hole, with a 9/64" bit, and then self-tap with the original slot box screw) worked for me. The screw started gripping again. I'll be less forceful when tightening slot box screws next time (I already learned the lesson the hard way with US Box fin screws). Important was to tape the other side of the hole shut so the epoxy stays put until hardened, and to tilt the board so the epoxy dried flush with the top of the hole. Also, epoxies I tried other than West System 105 resin with 205 hardener were too soft when cured and drilling ripped the glue out. West System epoxy drilled out nicely with a fine dust flowing out the bottom hole. |
