Sure it can. Airfare, gasoline, iW data, vacation time, bigger and smaller boards and sails, relocating, career abandonment ... all qualify.

What is up with with MaiTai Global renting and shutting down the Event Site this weekend? Roger

Is that the same group that reportedly displayed such bad sportsmanship en masse at Uppers on Maui recently?

Appear that you are correct. They were there May 16-19 for sure and the problems in uppers were May 15th and the following days, I was there. Could they have been the ones at the Hatch Friday with 2 escort jet skis also messing it up? Hope they get it out of their system while we are not windsurfing.

Here is the MaiTai Global schedule for Maui.

None of the general public are worthy of even viewing their schedule for the Gorge 2012. Public internet access is blocked.
After witnessing their dreadful behaviour on Maui, it would be nice to know how to avoid them.
What I don't understand is, if they are so self important, and such great additions to the local economy when they visit, why they are not striving to honour local rules and traditions rather than flaunting the rules.
Respect should be in order, and awareness of the locals interactions.Self policing of rude and intrusive behaviour should occur.
Each participant should be sent a copy of the Maui kiteboarding associations suggestions and areas of legal access,or CGWA guidelines.
If you want the public to respect your companies and business endeavours, you need to remember the public eye is on you(from a distance in the Gorge at the event site).

most effective response to rude invasion of MatTai Global barbarians would be to express your concerns to Hood River Chamber of Commerce, HR Port, and sponsors, such as Naish.

My complaint is the Event Site is closed to ALL sailors and ALL spectators for this elite event.

What's next? Exclusive use of the Event Site rented out for weddings or corporate outings?

Roger

I feel your pain... But its called the "Event Site" for a reason, and if you show up only to be surprised by an event underway and your access denied, you have only yourself to blame. The Port of Hood River has an on-line schedule that details all the events & bookings for the upcoming season. Bookings fall under two categories, "exclusive" and "non-exlusive". They are just as they sound; exclusive users have the Event Site to themselves, while non-exclusive users may hold their event, but not deny access to other users. You can check the schedule before you purchase your pass, and decide if its worth it for you to buy one.

Does preventing peons from launching at the Event Site prevent them from sailing there from other launches? I doubt it; the river belongs to the Corps and/or the public, not to HR.

Besides, it looks like Mother Nature has mooted (if news anchors can say "efforting", I can say "mooted") the question by providing 3 mph easterlies today. Tip to wind-based event schedulers who weren't paying attention the past 50 years: You can't schedule the wind and you don't own the water.
