Geez U2 I am trying not to be insulting but that link is for a slalom board and I am talking dedicated wave boards.

I can't see a formula for fin placement, there are too many variables. I will have a look where I placed my quad sides on my RRD and see, out of curiosity.
I would have to have some serious issue to extract the boxes then too replace with something else.
When installed at the factory the support structure is not as heavy as a do it yourself or repair would be. The weight in this area is also not so critical.
Slot box from Cobra weigh 132grams no screws, it gets 2, in 130mm length.
ProBox weights 49grams, will accept FCS fins.
So long as you like Futures fins, then the box is then a possibility.
You should keep in mind that a conversion is going to add some weight as you need to form a structure for strength, the carbon/cell/ Fiberglas and particularly Epoxy will all add weight to any conversion in addition to the box.
The Fanatic in the photos previous, with the addition of four ProBox was .5 pound, the paint on the original version , just the rear section was all I did was an additional .5, so a 1pound weight gain overall.
I have since tried to still paint as i enjoy making the designs, but moderate the amounts.
Not a concern to you but a consideration none the less, the weight of a longer single fin VS 4 small quads ;you gain some of the weight loss back. This especially true with light weight surf fins.

ok I won't take it that way.BUT I said it WAS NOT about a quad. It was information only to see jems presence/ not the content : on a RRD question.

So I was able to get the fins set up at 12" rears and 16.5" for the fronts with a little fin modification. This is right around the 2 finger separation. Can't wait to try it c'mon clearing winds.
Looking at the fin placement on the board it is almost like they used a twin fin guide and added the wingers as an afterthought. Second photo shows my footstrap right over the cluster now which in surfing is where you want to be.

I think the size of the board and many many other things will come into consideration as to where the fins are placed. This is Andy from Wind N C DaCurve 85L
should be 2010, as you see the rear fins have no adjustment in the slot box, fronts do have a little, 1/2" guess.
using the measures I had taken on this, the rear fins leading edge are 12.20"
the boxes have about 3/8" overlap.
The front fins are 16.14" to leading edge.
So those numbers are where your friend suggested is the sweet spot.

this is my RRD 74L wave twin with sides added.
In this photo:
the rears are 12" to leading edge, the fronts are 17.25" to leading edge , with provision to move forward the 3/8" available in the box. The length between leading and trailing edges is 2 1/8". Since I had whatever option I desired for the fronts, I also took in account measures from Quatro, Goya , MOO Custom, and where the leading fin edge is in respect to the rear footstrap front screw, in this case the screw is on the leading edge, the middle would have placed it right on your 16--16.5 figure.
From your latest photos as a comparison to the RRD the rears are opposite in the box to achieve the 12" measure.
The general rules I follow for the cluster are:
The closer together the fins are the looser the board.
The further up the board the whole cluster is placed the looser the board.
The further apart the cluster the turns will be more drawn out... stiffer
Combining these the fin setup can be balanced, of course with the bounds that the boxes have adjustment.
Using this placement I would think the board would be pretty loose, could be looser with the fronts forward. Since it was loose as a twin a firm ride would be my request and the rears back about 1".
Not sure which way to go for earlier planing, but would think wider apart if it were a issue

I went looking on the web for pics of different Quad setups. Helpful to see them all together.

Finally a weekend of wind and waves. Had a nice go out on Saturday with solid 8-10ft waves and some bomber sets mixed in .
The modified set up worked really well popped onto a plane so much better.
Turning should have been stiffer but I felt it was pretty snappy as I was able to redirect on the wave face and put the board wherever I wanted. I still have to get used to that Quad snap off the top. You can hit it so hard you essentially stall which may not be a good thing sometimes.
The blue foam in the fin boxes worked awesome. How do I know? In mid session it all came out completely and it was like having weeds stuck on the fins. I need to come up with a better fill material. Any suggestions?
Afterwards I compared my setup to my friends Goya Quad and the fins were essentially in the same place. Done deal in my mind.
