I've entered 2 or 3 local races, sat (or sailed) out 2 or 3 more. Every one was a head-shaking, mind-boggling comedy of reasons never to enter or watch one again. It demands a mindset totally foreign to mine. If I'm slower than racing might have made me, I'm fine with that. |

I would suggest that ALL facets of windsurfing are good for windsurfing... Olympic racing, freestyle, wave, slalom, lightwind cruising, high wind blasting... It's all good, and all integral to the sport, even if some of those disciplines are of no interest to me personally.
And I must agree with Boardsurfr- Not-so-serious races are an absolute blast!! Kudos to the ECWF organizers and participants for stoking everyone out! _________________ formerly known as hodad.andy

Snow skiing, water skiing, wake boarding, surfing, kiting, dirt bike riding, boating, snow mobile s & jet skis. Why would you expect windsurfing to be different in the ratio of people who race vs. people who don’t?

Look at the other sailing classes and you see lots of what could be called "obsolete" craft. If Olympic sailing is only viable if the craft are state of the art, then there would be no Olympic sailing.
RSX is just another sailing craft to match racing skills with other sailors. It's competition comparing skills, so what you are standing on isn't that big of a deal. The goal is to be the best in the world and what you do. |

Exactly, and I'd take it a step further, how many people have a high bar, or parallel bars, or a vaulting horse, or a 3 meter diving platform (or higher), or a half-pipe, or a firing range in their backyard?
Some do sure, but it's far from the masses.
Let the olympic style windsurfing show it's stuff. It's no more of a specialized olympic event as most of all the other ones are.
There is nothing to loose, even for us that do it differently. |
