Or buy your GF a set of diamond earrings to smooth the chasm created by trying to teach her.

I've heard it said that you should never attempt to teach your wife or girlfriend to windsurf, it can end in frustration, arguments etc...

I taught my wife to windsurf, she doesn't windsurf any more.
I taught my children to windsurf, they don't windsurf any more.
I taught about 6 of my friends to windsurf, they all still windsurf (with me).

This means something.

Biggest board you can find.

Ideally the volume of the board in liters should exceed the weight of the beginner in pounds.

Size and price are right on the Naish Kailua 230.

There are also some windsurfable paddleboards that are big enough, but might be more expensive. I have an Exocet WindSUP 11'8" which is 220 liters by 80 cm wide. Very stable, but also good looking and fun to sail. My GF loves it.

I second the point about getting her a lesson or joining a club. Making the social aspect of it fun is real important for persuading significant others to like windsurfing. You definitely don't want it to just be you and her out there with you yelling instructions at her.

Perhaps so. I'll have to take your as to why the Tabou is so great Wink Unfortunately, the local guy with one didn't reply.

So, does anyone have something similar in the Bay Area? I can travel a bit, or it looks like there might even be enough wind this sunday afternoon at Berkeley, so bonus if I could even try out a board then.

I taught my boyfriend to windsurf. He's still windsurfing (with me).

He's vastly better than I am; I like being able to say, "I taught him" to the admirers on the beach. He's the one who said, "I want to try that." I didn't say, "Do you want to learn to windsurf?" So he was motivated from the start, even though he's a weak swimmer and has a family reputation for screaming every time they went out in a boat when he was little.

I acknowledge that it's relatively rare that it works out this well, though, and never recommend it. But it can happen.

As for wetsuits, it's immeasurably more difficult for a woman to find a wetsuit that fits. Not all 38" chests are created equal. The windsurfing itself might very well seem easy in comparison.

Cal Sailing Club is still 75 per THREE months, or 25

Worth it for the rescue service alone.

I had specifically theyr Rocket model in mind, becouse it's a great freeride board/especially in the smaller sizes/, the 115l will fit you well and hey...it's 2010 !!!
The market is perhaps slow right now in the dead of winter ,but it will liven up for sure come spring. Just be patient and keep your eyes open.
Here are some board tests to give you some understanding for what you'll be looking for. They are about 120l boards wich will be fine if you are at an earlier stage , but a little big for your weight if you are fairly intermediate looking for a moderate wind board. Just stay away from the Futura! Starboard got it wrong when they replaced the Carve -an excellent freerider-with the Futura-an excellent freeracer.2 years later they realized it was mistake and brought back the great Carve.

Interesting you should mention the analogy. Here's what I wrote for
the UWA in "Sailing the High Deserts of Utah"

Try to get your hands on an old, used hi-fly revo. Best learning board ever. If you can't learn to windsurf on that, there's no hope.
