The Icom M 72 has been replaced by the Icom M73, smaller and allegedly more robust and water resistant. Pricey though.

$2,000 would sound cheap if I sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Nautilus Lifeline looks pretty cool.
It has a GPS beacon so USCG can locate you and a marine radio, plus is waterproof to 425feet. Mostly it's sold in dive shops. See link:

a lot of people carry an EPIRB. it's smaller than a radio and only requires pushing one button to notify the coasties who you are and gives them your gps coordinates. they're pricey, though, and that's all it does. no voice communication.

Icon 72 from West Marine. They are totally waterproof so i've carried mine in a camera case zip-tied to my harness. Four years an no issues. just rinse the salt off after each session. Also have a strobe and spare line. All goes on Da Hips.

If cell phone reception happens in the Bay, much cheaper alternative is a Casio Commando Mil-Spec cell phone. It's waterproof, shock-proof, vibration and drop rated for rough use. I've had one for two years and it goes surfing with me , no problems. Plus, since it's a smart phone, you can listen to Pandora to boot! It's availabe through Verizon as an upgrade... it's a sweet rig! Bull

I've never had an Icom M72 last more than a season. They all stop accepting charges. That's why I get the extended warranty with West Marine. Reminds me, I need to get a new one...

At least three. The dead one I have now will make four.

I just purchased the Icom M 73 last week which replaces the M72. I didn't purchase the insurance from West Marine. Should I have?
