I went to T.I. yesterday and parked on Northpoint. Then I noticed the old parking lot that had been fenced off for four years or so has reopened. There were a few guys in the lot but most of us parked out of habit on the street.
T.I. was rocking yesterday and I guess it was the day before. I was on a 3.5 when the sensor was reading 30 and was very nicely powered. It was the swell that wore me out.

yes, I parked in the lot yesterday. Nice thing is there are two gaps in the fence, so you can park in the lot and rig on grass. one of lady sailors reported getting heckled/harassed a bit the day before by a jogger. It would be nice to get more people parking in the old lot and get a critical mass, so people don't mess with us or our vehicles. We probably had about 6 or 7 cars in the lot yesterday.

That is great news.I liked parking in the old lot before it was fenced off. I will be parking back in the lot when I sail there.

May be time to revisit the sandbag launch as well?

Representing SFBA I have been attending some of the Navy cleanup community meetings and Bill R and myself met with TI real estate folks to see if we could get the parking lot open for this season. I am worried that we will have larger crowds sailing TI this summer due to the America's Cup taking over Crissy on some days and the parking spaces will be maxed out and some will be tempted to park in front of occupied apartments. which will of course will greatly annoy the residents.

So getting the lot back would really help, but the short answer is that Navy is not going to give up the parking lot until the rad waste cleanup is done (years away). i think the fencing changed because they are between phases of work and / or contracts. But the good news is that we can use the street west of Northpoint as overflow parking. It's a short walk across the grass between apartments to get to the area where we have been parkiing for the launch. There is also a lot south of the closed off parking lot that we can use. I'll put together a flyer showing these lots and post it out there as we get closer to the summer.

Thanks Tom for the update. Bayside Dr has been the overflow parking for North Point Dr. since 2009. I attended a meeting w/ Bill Roberson (I think) and another TI regular with the TI authorities, and did a little write up. There are pictures and a link to maps here:

It's really important that we self police. We are guests on TI, and we have to make sure windsurfers don't abuse the parking situation. Please do not park in front of any occupied buildings (even in their guest spots). Please only park in front of unoccupied buildings (pretty obvious). If you see another windsurfer behaving badly (parking, changing w/o a towel, playing loud music, blatantly drinking in public), please advise them to be respectful and discreet.

In addition to the guidelines that Kevin lays out above, please also note that one of the TI regulars has a reserved parking spot on the N side of Northpoint next to the abandoned (and totally sweet) El Camino.

The few of us who have unknowingly parked in this spot lived to regret our decision and have never made the same mistake again.

You have been warned.

To add to Kevin's 411, there is a single resident who pays particular attention to where we park and rig. He lives in the first unit of the occupied units closest to the closed parking lot/water on Northgate. While entirely pleasant and tolerant of the windsurfers, his simple and reasonable request is that we do not rig or place gear to the right of the mailboxes or essentially in front of his residence. The mailboxes are in the second photo linked to Kevin's post.

Ross.

Yeah, he's a nice guy. Likes us being around. But out of courtesy, I always tell people who rig on his lawn not to.
