Be aware that windsurfing the first mile off Crissy is fine for any advanced windsurfer who spends some time talking to locals about the current set up that day.
However sailing out to the Golden Gate's north tower requires some real local knowledge. There are wicked strong currents, counter currents, eddies, upwellings, huge ships and fog that can rush through the gate in minutes.
With a flood it is like sailing Stevenson on an east wind except with 2X the current and when it dies abruptly you don't get swept past Bob's beach you are swept deep into the bay with no way to walk back home.
With an ebb at Crissy you often have to slog a distance twice the width of the Columbia in faint wind then through voodoo square waves for 1/2 mile to get to the great swell out at the north tower. Once there it is amazing sailing, sweet swell and scenery to die for. So it is very hard to leave the north tower. But the wind can die between the north tower and Crissy leaving you stranded on a shrinking island of wind. And you risk being swept out into the pacific with the nearest land having 600 foot vertical cliffs.
Many summer days there are Coast Guard rescues of even experienced Crissy kiters and sailors. So go for it but talk to the locals and shoot back to near the beach every 15 minutes or so for a wind reality check. If you are out at the north tower and start noticing that new people are appearing on the water with larger sails then you are already in trouble.
The key is knowing when to head back and what course to take on the way back to allow for the current and then the counter current so you actually land at Crissy not inside the forest of pilings below the City Front pier buildings.
