hem lines, way back when, and generally speaking
yes some confusion.
I don't think they work for me, even the HotSails or Ezzy.
The recreational sails are , IMO not what we are discussing. _________________ K4 fins

'12 GaastraGTX 7.5 just arrived 1/2 hour ago.
Boom 208, but to the clew closer to 220, luff 467.
My Spectro 7.5 is 518 tall and 215 in boom.
My VX 7.3 is 516 and 217.
And the '12 is much heavier!
Won't try them until '13, as we're heading off to PuertoRico on Sat. |

My 2cts: I have been enjoying my naish boxer very much. It rigs on a 340, and with proper tension does not have too much back-hand power than was seen in other sail. I also own a Mutant and I was also very much surprised as to how they performed. For me, a light weight sailor, it is clear I do not need 5 battens and since I do have the know-how and strength to depower the sail I have no issue with such low aspect ratio sail. I am not going back to 5 battens. |

I have a 7.0 that I rarely use. (race sail). I might as high as a 7.5ish if i find a good deal.
I just got another Mutant, a 5.6. Rigs on a 400.
It is super light, but does not handle strong gust very well. I think 5.0ish might be the most you want out of 4 battens unless you wave sail in light wind, in that case lighter is better. |

on a good day, i'm ecstatic to be on a something as "small" as a 6.2 sail. in temparte zones along the western atlantic, we get pretty low winds with wide ranges of magnitude. some dayz i rig a 5.8 and have the opportunity to hang on for dear life, then slog. most often used sail in florida: 7.5. 4 battens stink above 5.0 agreed.
however, we've got a 5.8 charge that is as light as anything else out on the market because it has technora. 5 battens. what applies to pro's doing double loops in paradise does not apply to the average joe. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

If we are just talking about using a sail purely for wave riding then a good sailmaker can make a good 4 batten wave sail. Bump & Jump I don't do so I'm not commenting on that.
I sailed the 2013 Goya Banzai 4 batten sail in Punta San Carlos in sizes 5.7, 5.3 and 4.7, and thought it was as good a sail as most 5 batten sails of similar construction strength in those sizes. For my weight (195 lbs) the sail had no problem handling overpowered conditions. I thought it performed better well powered and over powered than in slog and ride conditions. The first time I used one I hated it because I rigged it the same way I rig my sails at home. Then Joey re-rigged it for me and it was much much better - i.e. if you don't like it you are not rigging it correctly.
FYI I don't own any Goya sails, don't intend to buy any Goya sails and have no affiliation with Goya in any way. I still think the sails I use at home are better than the Goya Banzai. |

80% of my sailing is on the surf. i'm 210 lbs and have been WS'ing for 3 decades. i tune my sails with lots of tension for being lit up. very little for forcing a smaller sail to work in gusty conditions. i tend to like doing the latter than the former unless time or forecasts force me do do otherwise. i'll use a 5.8 with very little tension, meanwhile, a 165 lb'er may use a 6.2 flattened in the same conditions. OTOH, if i'm primarily blasting i'll go lots bigger with lots more tension. sometimes i freak out my 145 lb friends by having the same size sail as them.
sails and tuning takes lots of trial and error, agreed. complicating it all is what masts does one have on hand. that's a whole lot more typing. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com
