Hey so as many of you know im pretty new to windsurfing. I ave been reading a lot about it, watching videos, taking lessons but I wanted to know if any of you could further explain some things to me. Explain things such as mast base, mast extension, and the different types and sizes of fins an what they are used for.

Thanks for your time!

Google windsurfing books and instructional and product websites for hundreds of pages on the subject. You'll learn MUCH more than we could type in solid weeks of typing.

I'm sure you will. Your videos (including instructional, I trust) and lessons are a big step in the right direction and show a willingness and enthusiasm which will serve you well.

base and ext here, there are a few different varieties, they all attach the rig to the board. the extension will com in lengths to adjust to the luff, mast length VS sail size, and either Standard diameter mast SDM ,FAT ,
or REDUCED diameter mast RDM, aka skinny.

http://www.windance.com/Windsurf-Bases-%26-Extensions/?subcategory=Chinook

fins: come in length and are measured generally by length ie:25cm/ 9.8" and the area which is square area in cm or inches.

the general types are, wave- curved to facilitate turns, normally short..25cm and smaller

slalom or race //pointer: they pretty much extend straight down , their forte is speed.

freeride: is a combo of characteristics straight and with a small curve at the bottom tip, to allow speed early planing and turns.

FREESTYLE: short stubby 20cm or shorter, allow maneuvers, specialized fin for freestyle, used by others who have great technique.
WEED fins, have a sharp rack at the leading edge to allow weeds to slide off rather than gather and reduce speed, needed where weeds are present, some work well at sailing and shedding weeds.

the basic size is determined by the board in liters, and the sail size you will use it on . Variables are many and include sailor weight, sea conditions etc

the above "general" types are often combined in shape to make a all round type fin.

for one board an ideal fin quiver would be 2/3 fins of different lengths and or shapes to accommodate the various sail sizes the board will support. When it becomes winder a smaller fin will help maintain board control, it will slow it down because its smaller, a different shape will do the same.

there are many websites and now blogs introducing people to windsurfing

james douglass has even a sail and board calculator - so you know where to start with in terms of equipment
http://jimbodouglass.blogspot.ca/2010/11/updated-windsurf-calculator-online.html

the riggeek has many instructional videos
http://riggeek.com/

in my blog i try to take the approach of an average joe windsurfer
ie not for experts or wave riders - people who live in less than ideal places and are perhaps considered heavyweight - like me
here is link to my index - where you can look up things and ask me questions directly
http://joewindsurfer.blogspot.ca/2011/03/index.html

other bloggers are just as helpful !!!
