The most affordable, (50+mPG), practical and reliable vehicle in that list is probably the Toyota Prius......

You could always switch to kiting. With all the money you will save downsizing to a smaller car you could buy three kites , two boards, and fit it all in a Mini Cooper, with room to spare. |

For some locations and needs, that could be the best answer yet. |

To answer the original question about other similar options to the Volvo...I have a 2001 BMW 3 series wagon. The new model is very slightly larger in cargo capacity. I can, easily, carry a board inside up to 8'4" along with a couple sails, booms etc. by folding the passenger seat flat. Well built roof rails if needed. Swing up window in tailgate is nice when cramming it with gear. 30 MPG cruising fast. 125K miles and only the struts and brakes replaced (I drive hard on mountain roads) and a couple other very minor repairs.... Check Consumer Reports (a recent copy) instead of iwindsurf for reliability of any models. Some of the Euro cars have pretty good ratings. |

True enough; I see the hipster kiters on crown beach with just this.
But one question remains - where do I put the crutches after I lay myself out on the rocks kiting? |

By all means. JD Powers, CR, long lists of independent mechanics, many owners, the European agency which oversees warranties and does the actuarial reliability analysis of all Euro brands (it rated many Euro brands absolutely rock bottom just a few years ago), dealers which carry ALL makes of late model higher-end cars ... LOTS of sources ... as I did.
Yes, some Euro brand 2012 models are bucking trends by moving way up to the average or below average rankings. They SHOULD; they're only a year old. |

I'm willing to guess that isobars has never owned a BMW or any other premium brand European car, but he is regularly very negative about them. I often wonder why he does that. |

My first hand findings are 'some EURO' cars are WAY overpriced, costly and require MORE maintenance, which is also higher and parts considerable more so than imports, specifically Honda and Subaru.
You should enter that arena knowing that and expect to pay for it, if you need to keep up with the in crowd.
I paid more for a Porsche wheel, from a re cycler than I have for some cars.
My Subaru is faster to 100mph, than a Audi that costs 40 THOUSAND dollars more.
this is all way off topic for someone who wants to replace a Ford wagon _________________ K4 fins

I'm addressing reliability, not cost. Will it get me to and from the wind, every time, with tunes, climate control, headlights, brakes, and a clear windshield? I side with large scale statistics, not occasional lemons or cream puffs (I've had both, from both Detroit -- heck, from Ford alone -- and Japan).
