|
|
I'm buying a new rig for my RRD Xfire 144, and I'm not sure exactly which sails to go with. I'm 190 lbs, mostly sail in 15 knots, sometimes up to 20. Much under 15 and I won't go out, so I want to cover a range from ~12-22
knots with two sails.
I really like Severne NCXes, and can get them cheap, so I was thinking a 9.0 for the lighter ends with the 60cm fin I currently have, and then a 6.5 or 7.0 for the upper end with a smaller fin (48?). Mast will be Severne blue line 490 + an extension for the 9.0, also Severne Blue line boom.
What are your guys thoughts?
Thanks |

You know the slalom boards are made to be sailed overpowered which means to be used with bigger sails then comparable size but different type boards. At 190 lbs you can go 10 m easily on this board. Of course since you are not competing you can go a lot smaller too, but the board will feel clumsy and not fast at all. I don't reccomend you going smaller then 8.0 on it and yes a smaller fin will make it way faster with a smaller sail and will prevent it from tail walking at higher speed. It will be gentler on your back leg too.For a 9.0 a 52 cm fin will be a lot better, for 8.0 a 46 cm one.For 6-7 m sails you'll be much better with a 100 -110 lt board. It will be much more fun. |

Of course not! For 20 to 30 mph wind. This can be your medium wind-strength board, not your light wind one . You have the Xfire for that. |

I use my KA Koncept 8.5m in 12-20 (sometimes more). Sails that size really do benefit from cambers in terms of range. I don't need another size in that "quiver" - I change down from that sail (on my 75cm wide slalom board) to a 5.3m on my 85l quad.
If I were sailing flat water only, I would go to a 7.0 with a 65cm wide slalom board instead.
Even lower-tension two or three cams have a much greater sweet spot than these modern freeride sails (Severne NCX or KA Koyote). They are amazing considering the lack of cams, but I am much happier with the 3-cam. _________________ florian - ny22

Alright, the XFire is 84cmm wide, so maybe an 8.5 Maui Sails Blaze? 3 cams, but still fairly lightweight. Would that cover a good range with two different fins on the Xfire? |
