Hi Gang,
The new blog entry has graphics and video showing the causes of the heat wave and the coming marine surge.
If you have never grasped what an upper trough and upper high pressure look like this imagery will really help.

See that thin band of clouds just above Pt. Conception?
That's a minor front, we've been killing it at Arroyo Laguna for the last two days,,,,,,,,, sorry about that.
Tomorrow could be totally different though.

Hi nw30,
Sorry, that thin band clouds above Pt. Conception was 2-3 miles above since it only shows in the water vapor imagery. And even it some of that wind somehow reached the surface it was moving from SW to NE so it did not account for your Arroyo Laguna winds.
Instead the great Arroyo Laguna wind was caused by the good old North Pacific High's surface NW winds. Having that storm system to the north is stopping the North Pacific High from moving up to west of the Gorge which is its July stomping grounds in a normal year.
