So the venerable Fanatic Freewave is getting a major facelift for 2014. A 96 liter board will drop down to 234 in length, my older Freewave's are 247 and 246 in length. I guess all things eventually change, but as mostly a SF Bay sailor I still like the longer length and narrower width for the wicked chop the Bay can produce on certain tide conditions and high wind days. I'm sure the new design will do great for most conditions, the new colors look pretty cool too, but I wonder about good days at Waddell or windy/choppy days on the Bay. I saw a new model on the Naish website called the Starship for wave, bump and jump sailing that still keeps the length a bit longer, interesting to see not everyone is on the short wide platforms. |

Naish 2002 Flying Pig, 239 X 59 ///101L
winds of change is a good, make that great title.
Wish I still had my Pig
I have gotten used to the compact shapes. But see your point..
maybe we are just too specialized and hard for the board companies to please. _________________ K4 fins

heh, I also had that Flying Pig... I remember it was so much shorter than any other board out there at the time. For some reason I was just thinking about this board when I was in the water yesterday... possibly because I was doing a long upwind slog for 20+ minutes at Point Isabel. Was wondering how short the Flying Pig was/wasn't. Thanks for posting the specs... that is roughly a 90-95l freestyle wave board these days.
If you want an older FreeWave, I have a 2012 Fanatic FreeWave 95 TE in stock. _________________ Kevin Kan

yours Kevin was the 1st one I saw, at the shop in Berkeley, you were installing the footstraps
it was a kool board, far ahead of its time, and Naish still does that, from time to time _________________ K4 fins

Well, you sure can't top a name like Flying Pig! When I first sailed my Naish Global Wave 98, 239 in length, I kept looking in front of my mast track thinking,"I can't believe how short this board is." Flying Pig, Back to the Future! |

if one is doing push loops to forward type composite jumps, perhaps shorter is better? if one is slogging out to grab waves, shorter just plain sucks. all about what the consumer wants? if all the consumers were in pozo, hookipa, and other monster winds spots, perhaps shorter is justified? what about the rest of the world? _________________ www.aerotechsails.com
