Though I agree with your take on the Grand Old Party not being so grand anymore, you don't have to go back to Eisenhower. Bob Dole recently said he and Reagan wouldn't be welcome in the present GOP either.

Dole is an idiot, what a poor candidate he was for prez., Reagan would be welcomed back with open arms. His only mistake, taking the dems for their word, they lied to him on taxes and on immigration reform.

You could be right. I dont know the man personally, only his record in office.
Thirty years in the senate, chosen by the GOP as the majority and minority leader and Pres candidate.
He was a close personal friend of Reagan and worked closely with him on writing Reagan's policies.
He worked for his paycheck.
Unlike present Congress he had a big success at actually getting bills passed,
If he was an idiot, he was Reagan and the GOPs idiot.
I sourced him because he surely knows 100 times more than I do about Reagan and the GOP past and present.
I always try to at least consider it when a person vastly more knowledgable than me expresses a opinion on any subject.

We have heard so much about how we need to reduce regulations and trust our corporations, particularly those who produce oil. Really?

Quote:
HOUSTON — Halliburton has agreed to plead guilty to destruction of critical evidence after the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010, the Justice Department announced on Thursday.

The oil services company said it would pay the maximum allowable fine of $200,000 and will be subject to three years of probation. It will also continue its cooperation in the government’s criminal investigation. Separately, Halliburton made a voluntary contribution of $55 million to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

The Justice Department filed one criminal charge against the company. In a statement, Halliburton said that the violation was a misdemeanor associated with the deletion of records created after the accident. Additionally, the company said, “The Department of Justice has agreed that it will not pursue further criminal prosecution of the company.”

Halliburton has suffered enormous damage to its reputation — as have BP and Transocean, the operator of the Deepwater Horizon rig — in the explosion that killed 11 workers and soiled hundreds of miles of beaches. All three companies have pleaded guilty to a criminal charge related to the spill.

Haliburton's laughing all the way to the bank. $200,000 is not even pocket change to them.

They destroyed critical evidence and were caught at it -- a tactic straight from the Dick Cheney Book of Corporate Ethics and Morality.

Don't weep for them.

We've seen so much about how overregulation strangles the economy and oil companies won't build in this country because of over zealous environmental groups. Here's the latest in Richmond:

Quote:
After months of trying to reach a settlement with Chevron, the city of Richmond says it will sue the company over last year's refinery fire.

The mayor of Richmond has confirmed the city will file a lawsuit against Chevron Friday morning.

Richmond city leaders say the fire has had a huge impact on the community.

Not only did it send 15,000 people to the hospital, city leaders say it cost Richmond millions of dollars in emergency response and caused property values to plummet.

The mayor says the city has an obligation to take legal action.

"We want to make it clear that we the people of Richmond and the city council as a whole community are making sure Chevron is held accountable for the harm they have done to us as a city and a community," Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin said.

The details of the lawsuit are not yet being released but the city will hold a press conference Friday morning.

Chevron says the city's decision to sue is a waste of the Richmond's resources.

"We believe the decision to pursue such a suit is a waste of the City’s resources and yet another example of its failed leadership," Chevron spokesperson Melissa Ritchie said in an e-mail statement.

City councilman Tom Butt says Richmond has seen property values plummet, costing the city and schools millions in property tax revenues, but he says the lawsuit is about more than just money.

"It's wanting to have some assurances that Chevron has taken the lessons learned to heart and that they have changed their culture of safety at the refinery, and the risk in the future is going to be lower than it was in the past," Butt said.

Community activists say they are glad the city is finally taking action. They say hundreds will march to the gates of the refinery this weekend to mark the one-year anniversary of what many consider one of the worst disasters Richmond has ever seen

"We believe Chevron not only owes Richmond an apology, but a significant amount of cash investment so we can help turn our community around," said Andres Soto, who represents Communities for a Better Environment.

The statement by Chevron spokesperson shows the industries fine grasp of public relations, and their skill at acknowledging the legitimate health concerns of their neighbors, eh? Seems to be a consistent style.

Of course, the fire occurred because Chevron ignored their own maintenance procedures and did not replace a pipe that was corroding. I guess the corrosion is the fault of the environmental groups.

Willie Sutton would have a pretty good idea what's going on here.

More signs of corporate stewardship of the environment:

Quote:
RICHMOND - Chevron has agreed to pay the Bay Area Air Quality Management District $190,000 to settle air quality violations at its Richmond refinery prior to the fire there last August, air quality officials announced today.

The civil settlement covers 19 violations at the refinery reported between 2010 and August 2012 and aren't linked to the Aug. 6 fire that spewed toxic smoke into the air and sent about 15,000 area residents to local hospitals, according to air quality officials.

The violations covered in the settlement included record-keeping errors, flaring and gas and oil releases into the air detected by the air district monitors positioned at the boundaries of the refinery, district spokesman Aaron Richardson said.

Six air monitoring stations that Chevron agreed to install at its Richmond refinery in 2010 were not put in place, which might have slowed warnings about the danger of pollutants released during the refinery’s disastrous August fire, city officials and air quality regulators say.

The company pledged to install the equipment as part of a May 2010 agreement with the city of Richmond that settled a dispute over how much the refinery owed in utility taxes.

"It was clearly the intention by the city and Chevron to have these monitors in place by now," said John Gioia, a Contra Costa County supervisor and board chairman of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, who also is a Richmond resident.

I have to agree with mrgybe--Chevron is just being bullied and robbed by those poor citizens in Richmond who want to breathe.

It does appear that Chevron has been studying Willie Sutton's career for pointers:

Quote:
A day before the first anniversary of the destructive fire at Chevron's oil refinery in Richmond, the company pleaded no contest Monday to six criminal charges arising from the incident.

As part of the deal, Chevron agreed to pay $2 million in fines and restitution and accept additional oversight and inspection of its operations during a 3 1/2-year probation period, authorities said.

Tell me again about the rabbits.
