11:30 sunday. Doug's beach is currently closed due to water quality issues. I called the number shown and they told me friday rains had overflowed The Dalles sewer treatment facility.

Thanks for taking the time to post this. I sailed at Rowena for about three hours 3/4 years ago the last time the treatment plant dumped sewage. No notices or anyone looking out for river users that day.

I get a kick out of the instructions for those nasal lavage kits that work so well for rivernose: "Boil the water before each daily use". The reason is that some city water systems harbor a bacteria known to occasionally be fatal if it gets too far up our nose.
Doods, we're washing everything from Monsanto's finest concoctions to e coli from The Dalles outta there; what's one more bug?
Considering what'a up our nose after a session in any big river, tap water's good enough for me. This happens every few summers at Doug's, so it's nothing out of the ordinary.

2:45 @ Doug's- Monday 8/19. e-coli count has caused emergency closure again! Heard Columbia RiverKeeper has good links to get accurate water quality info.

I was windsurfing Mayer St. Park (Rowena) yesterday (Monday). Close to the OR shore, I spied chunks of ? with a nice bright green layer of algae around them. During my session, I spit a lot, made certain to never crash, and avoided the aerosol spray of other windsurfers upwind of me. After my session, I poured a gallon of fresh water over my whole body and showered with soap after arriving home.
Today, I have no signs of infection. I'm wondering about others. Mayer was relatively busy with windsurfers and a few others. I think it's interesting how WA is conservative and OR more laissez-faire with state park policy. I think there must be lots of eddies downstream of The Dalles that will hold poop for a long time.

Here is the link to postings about water quality on the Columbia . I couldn't get the app they mention. It kept showing up for Lake Ontario. |
Boylie - Download the swimgude app as it appears (Lake Ontario) and it will use your location to display beaches in your area.

A lot of us sailed at Rowena over the weekend. A kiter passed the warning on to us early Saturday, but the phone numbers didn't work on the weekend and there was nothing about it on the internet that we could find - including at the Columbia River Keepers site. I asked the Oregon Parks people, and they hadn't heard anything about it. I decided the sign was an old one (It was not dated.) for the May 2010 e-coli warning that we did find on the internet. It is certainly a YUK factor. A couple of changes to their notification procedure would help.
