Has anyone thought about making their own custom fins to be 3D printed? I work for a 3d printing company and was trying to imagine finding a market for this type of industry. Would any of you be interested in such a thing?
Of course the hardest part would be designing and producing the 3D CAD file on the computer but that's something I could do given appropriate specifications.
Thoughts??

No way it would be strong enough except for small multifins. Even the best SLA, SLS or FDM parts are no where near the strength of a material like G10..

Yeah, I was thinking about strength issues but it would be interesting to at least try out and see what happens. FDM might work for fins around 25cm and smaller.

Some thruster surfboards still use plastic fins. There used to be a line of cheap windsurfing fins made of plastic. If you roll over the reef and hit a rock, I think it would be over for them, so they'd have to be inexpensive.

Once the cad file is made, what would it cost to make the fin?
Would a milling machine make the same thing any cheaper?

The cost would probably be around 70-80$, but that is dependent on the size of the fin. I might make one for fun and try it out. I don't think I can damage my board or fin box in the process...I hope.

t write it off just yet, you could make cores and glass over.
Or use a prepreg material, or some ceramic you can bake.
Hard to beat evolution....the CNC can grind them out

So I was able to get this project rolling at work. The fin has been printed in Ultem 9085 and measures 29cm. As you can see, the design of it was purely based on strength of the part since I have no clue how this will hold up under normal sailing conditions. We will be making a short video of the production and a clip of me sailing it when the wind looks favorable.
It flexes way more than a G10 fin so I imagine it will fail pretty quickly..I am excited to try it out. I think this is the worlds first 3d printed windsurfing fin
