|
|
I went out windsurfing on my friends starboard Sup on Wednesday and unfortunately a chunk of the area under the mast foot got ripped out exposing the foam. I had noticed soft spots under the mast base for quite some time now but ignored it largely due to my inexperience.
I was hoping to repair the same by filling the cavity with epoxy putty and jamming the peices together as they are still attached and it havent been seperated yet.
Will this work or does anyone have ideas on what I can do? Unfortunately professional board repair is out of the question as I'm based in India and we have no windsurf board repairers and Im not too handy with tools either.
Thanks.

You say the pieces are still attached? Can You post some Pictures of the area. It sounds like the insert for the mast base on the board cracked at the deck and let water in around the insert and once it gets soft it finally Delaminated and broke free. Is the insert broken free from the deck and pulled out? I would not try to just put epoxy into the hole. Need some pictures of the damage to give you a solution. Mike

Agree with boardheads assesment. I don't think your method of repair will solve the problem that caused the board to get soft in the first place.
Lots of helpeful info can be found here:

Its a pretty big rip on the entire top of the deck around the mast foot area. The parts are still together cause only one side of the board got ripped

Is the mast track/ box that the mast foot screws into still in the board? Are there any cracks in it? It's hard to tell what I'm looking at from the picture. I can see that the eva foam and some of the deck that the foam was bonded to delaminated from the foam. It appears that pieces of the deck are still bonded to the eva foam, but not the core foam
Throw all that junk away that tore away from the deck, it can't be salvaged. You need to repair the deck that has been torn away. You may need to install a new mast box insert. I can't tell from the picture

I cant tell from that picture what is going on with the insert. Too hard to tell. You might have to take a razor blade and cut between the eva pad and the deck of the board and remove the pad a little so you can take a better picture and see what's happening around the insert. Mike

The only way to get to the heart of the problem is to remove the compromised EVA padding and the entire damaged area of the board. You need to understand the extent of the damage before you can adequately repair everything. Doing less than that is really short sighted, and it can cause more extensive problems over time.

So what's going on with the pad on the board it looks like a lot of EVA foam chunks are taken out of the deck pad. Any progress so far on remove pad around the insert? Mike
