You might want to take a look at this forum site and check for more information. The tip I can give is use the dagger board to go up wind and slide the mast track forward for up wind sailing, the board will rail up and cruise up wind. Just be careful that you don't go to far up wind at speed those old sails like to back wind and pile drive into the water. Then beam reach or broad reach start sliding the mast back and then the center board up to get planning and into the straps. Hope this helps Cheers! Mike

I stopped using dagger board completely and still can go upwind. It all depends on your stance. If you have learned harness already, you should be able to go upwind without the dagger board.
Make sure your front foot level with the mast foot, along the board (not across!), you body is turned forward, head looking upwind.
I weight around 73kg and can do without the dagger board on both Fanatic Viper 190L and Fanatic Shark 135L
