Onshore winds, or any wind, you need at least 4 mph boardspeed within 45 degrees of the wave direction. From there, you can pump onto the wave, you can step forwards to the nose and push the nose down the wave face, combi those.
A surfer really paddles around 2.5mph in flat water, but using the wave face, can accelerate up to a plane...maybe 14 mph, by using the wave face.
