I am sailing 7 to 8+ sails on a 1990's transitional board and need a weed fin. Is there a rule of thumb for CM length vs. Sail size regarding weed fins?
Thanks..

the square area of fins are often overlooked, its shown as cm2
cm in square cm
it along with the length it will provide a more telling indicator of the fins potential performance window .
Weed and regular fins will vary a lot on area
I may look at Makanis selection, True Ames, Black Project Fins , MFC, MUF and compare the quoted areas along with length.
the particular fin should be somewhat designed for your transitional board , help if we knew what it was and size
Math and windsurfing dont always work out, a rule of thumb don't think so _________________ K4 fins

THanks...board is an older TIGA 10' 6" with sliding track and dagger which I dont use.
Sails are aeroteich 7 and 8.4 a few years old.
I'm 195 lbs.
I'm not looking for the perfect fit in terms of high perforamnce, etc ...I just sail in an area with light sea grass now and the and want to be sure there's enough bite in the water for the larger sails. Years ago my weed fins were more area where now they look like highly raked dagger types so it seem addtional lenght is needed to make up for lost area? |

I use a Makani Hahalua 38 that I like with my 7.5 on a Kona One. I'm 220. It's on the small side and doesn't work well with my 9.0. If you go with Makani, you should probably go for the 43. They have good grip, low spinout and shed weeds fine. It works great when it's just impossible to ride with a normal freeride fin. |

The general rule of thumb for fin size is sail size x 5 = fin length in cm (e.g. 35 cm for 7.0, 40 cm for 8.0). Add 2 cm when underpowered, subtract 2 cm when overpowered.
Weed fins tend to have larger areas than comparable pointer fins, so it is often possible to go about 20% shorter. However, you typically pay with reduced upwind performance (lower possible angles). Going to a weed fin that is the same size as a pointer reduces this problem somewhat.
As U2 points out, square area is important, so look at that. In addition, the profile is important - high-end fins can perform a lot better than cheap fins. Unfortunately, price alone is not a good predictor of performance. I really like weed fins from Maui Ultra Fins (which have done very well in magazine tests) and Black Project Fins. I use the BPF WEEDspeed 42 (which has a depth of just 33.6 cm) with an 8.5 and a 71 cm wide slalom board. It is a bit small, but it's the biggest one they make. I'll probably get a MUF Slalom-Weed 42 (which has a depth of 42 cm) for less windy days. |
