I think it depends upon the type of environment you like and are used to.
If you come from a large urban area going to live in Maui will seem like living at the end of the world while LV will seem like another planet. |

Been living on Maui for 4 years and it is awesome. There is so much to do here and the weather is almost perfect. Just like any other place on this planet, there will be times when you want a change - from the peeps, from the weather, from whatever. Maui is definitely more expensive than LV so it is what your budget is which will be the determining factor. A job in Maui is good to have. |

I've hit SPI for 3 years now for a month each time. Usually in April. Windsurfing is good, but far from great. I think if you sail 50% of your time you are doing well. And it is VERY flat sailing. If you are working on freestyle, awesome, if not, it would get really old to me. I hear the fall is good too. But that is just 3 - 4 months per year. I wouldn't consider it for a full time residence.
I have friends who live in Hood River and vacation in LV in the winter. They love it. Summer in Hood River is awesome, and fall is pretty cool for non-windsurfing activities (you can sail, just don't count on it). Then come November they hit the road south till about March. Come back just in time for the early spring in Hood River. Not a bad combination IF you can afford to do both.... |

There is something tricky in our little windsurfing pysches that stems from the hoping, searching, and waiting for the right combination of wind and waves. I'm guessing that once you retire to a windsurfing local where there are consistently good conditions your relationship to the sport will change.
My advice is try 6 months out in a windsurfing dream local first. I'd choose the spot with the absolute best windsurfing for pushing your level and style of sailing. You may find that you get it out of your system. You may also find that a true waterman's lifestyle becomes you. You've prob seen it, but read through GP's maui blog. He chased a dream and move to Maui from Italy.
For me windsurfing is an awesome counterbalance to work life, but I'd way rather retire in Italy.

I would consider Hood river , I went last summer and I was impressed by the community of "elderly" people who were kick ass windsurfers. It is a beautiful place and if you like skiing it is a bonus! |

Hood River is awesome in the Summer. Pretty good in the spring and fall, but sucks big time in the winter. A gray inversion level comes in and doesn't leave for weeks or months. Kiss seeing the sun goodbye. One of the reasons why many of the "elderly" people flee to Baja for the winter.... |

You must have been sailing at Swell City.
Summer in the gorge, rest of the year on Maui is the way to keep from getting island fever. |

Yeah, Baja is so scary - banditos behind every cactus, drug dealers under every rock. Whatever you do, stay away! I cower in fear the entire 6 months I'm down here! |

Portland, Oregon. Great windsurfing an hour away in the Gorge. Great skiing at MT Hood year round. SUP on rivers and lakes abounding. Great biking and hiking everywhere. Cool town with a great music scene and good restaurants. Best airport in the US to hop that five hour flight to Maui anytime. I had the opportunity to move my business to Maui a few years ago, but I decided against it cause I wanted to keep the ""special "" special. I love Maui but I know once you turn special to the daily routine, you lose the special. Bought a house in the Portland suburb of Beaverton a couple of years ago, who knows, someday... Bull |
