I picked up a pair of Dakine Nitrous HD harness shorts. They're actually classified as a kite harness but I noticed that David Ezzy wears them so I thought I'd give them a try.
After one outing I like them. A bit of an adjustment from a waist harness but I think they'll be more comfortable and functional for holding down an 8.5 on a windsup without foot straps.
I have to admit to wanting to try a seat harness for some time now but resisted simply because of the diaper stigma and vanity. The harness shorts are far less geeky IMHO.
Anyone else have experience with them?

A few public faceplants ... or "Gecko loops" as one fellow calls them ... and that vanity handicap will be a thing of the past. At that point you can get on with optimizing your fun without GAS about what anyone else thinks. That's freedom. Just think ... soon you'll be driving a minivan, wearing a helmet and rib armor, dressing for YOUR comfort, and thinking that a face guard might be worth considering. Smile

Working in shops from mid 80's thru '03, we encountered several generations of 'em.
Most were bulky, tore at the attachement points, stuck as a harness/short, and took up room and stayed wet.
I've been using seat harnesses since '85, so they are not an advantage.

Vanity? I think we all know why kiters have to wear shorts over their wetsuits. They are hiding something. Not a big thing Wink.

That vanity thing can be a real bitch.
I have to wear a paper bag over my head, when I go out in the morning with my PJ's on, to grab the newspaper in front of my house.
I just don't want anybody to know who I am.

Ok, ok, it was not my intention to insult those who wear seat harnesses.
Just saying I like how they took a seat harness and attached some extra fabric to make them into shorts. I like them and was wondering if other windsurfers like them too as they are actually marketed as kite shorts. Yikes.

I like lower back support too much to rely on harness shorts.

If one actually looks at the Nitrous harness shorts you will quickly realize the design is a seat harness with a bit of extra fabric for legs. They are not a pair of board shorts with a spreader bar stuck on.

If that does provide solid lower back support, my next concern would be how well the shorts fit over anything from board shorts to a 5mm dry suit, maybe even over neoprene shorts or some fleece.

I prefer the Vision. I never even know I'm wearing it on land, yet can sail all day in it without any back issues. Its rear cable provides an outstanding rescue/tow handle (I drag my butt just above the water, towee grabs the cable, I hook in, and and away we go, relaxed) and an anchor to keep my rib armor down outta my face. I used to prefer their SurfSeat, but when they made it the size and heft of a Recaro car seat I switched.
