If the Exocet WindSUP 11'8" has an Achilles' heel it's the Allgaier daggerboard gasket. Mine was crap right from the start.

http://jimbodouglass.blogspot.com/2012/10/big-wonderful-things-little-annoying.html

The lip strips didn't fit the slot right, and the holder grooves got kind of bent up so the lips were always catching water or causing cavitation. Putting a piece of gorilla tape across the front of the gasket helped, but wasn't an ideal or lasting solution.

Today I was planing around and riding some 1' high waves, and one of the lips peeled half off. I pulled it the rest of the way off and tucked it in my harness, then finished the session.

Now I've got the gasket disassembled and I'm trying to think of a better alternative. I could order a raceboard-style glue-on gasket, but it wouldn't be flush with the deck because the allgaier gasket area is recessed about 1 cm. I'd have to build it up or use some kind of shim.

Has anyone done a modification like this before who could share their insights?

Thanks,
James

The gaskets on my 11'8 didn't fit flush either. The ridges on the gasket just didn't fit well into the slot on the board, it's somewhat like a zip-loc bag seal.
I found a very easy fix however.
Carefully peel the gaskets off and then heat them very conservatively with a heat gun (hot water may work too) and then snap them back into place and hold flush until they cool.
Worked perfectly for me and have had zero problems since doing this.

I found a sheet of PVC at home depot that was just the right thickness to fit in the recessed area where the daggerboard gasket was.

I cut and shaped it to size with a jigsaw and a planer.

The hard part was drilling holes in it that would exactly match up with where the screw holes were in the board. I also had to drill some wider shallow areas on top of the small holes, so the heads of the screws could be recessed for less drag.

It worked pretty well in the end, though. Hopefully this will give me a little less drag than the crappy daggerboard gasket did. I'll still need to work something out for a working gasket, though.

Jim- I'm about to undertake a gasket replacement on an older Equipe (the 80's one - also doing the finbox). I plan on filling any recesses with foam and glassing a bed for PVC freezer-door strip material (the dangling stuff to keep the cold air inside of walk-ins when the door is open). I made a gasket out of this stuff for 90's Mistral Malibu S. Was too stiff/sticky to use without SailKote, but it is virtually indestructible. And SuperGlue holds it very well. Can be sourced from McMaster.

I wish Exocet would offer the 10 and 11'8 without daggerboard in the bamboo version, that's what I want for X-Mas!
