Candlestick Park Sailing Area is a gem among Bay Area sailing sites. Its future is threatened, and you can help ensure it will stay windy for years to come.

The Brisbane Baylands Project is a 700 acre mixed-use development planned directly upwind of Candlestick. Building in this zone, especially the area downwind of the Alemany Gap (which amplifies the wind at the stick), has the potential to significantly degrade the wind quality for windsurfing.

The potential damage includes creating wind shadows, decreased average wind speeds, increased turbulence, and more extreme gusts and lulls.

Most critically, with the 5% to 10% decrease in wind speed due to this development as currently predicted by Brisbane's own engineers, a 20% to 40% decrease in the number of sailable days is likely.

Both the San Francisco Boardsailing Association (SFBA) and the newly established Candlestick Preservation Association (CPA) have put in a ton of work researching the proposed development and coming up with comments to submit during the Environmental Impact Report comment period that ends 11/22.

You can help ensure that their comments are seriously considered by taking a few minutes to write your own comments in support of the SFBA/CPA comments.

When you write, it would help to express your support for the mitigations suggested in the SFBA/CPA comments. They are:

• Clustering of multi-story development on the southern portion of the plan area well to the south of the Alemany Gap.
• Streamlining all buildings and orienting them to limit their impact on winds at the Candlestick Sailing Area.
• Requiring a specific plan for any development on the northern portion of the site, which repeats the wind analysis by wind tunnel for that development, and includes such measures as lowering the overall height of the development and/or streamlining to prevent any reduction in wind speed or increase in turbulence and extreme wind conditions.
• Ensuring that multistory buildings are built as far west and as far from the water as possible.
• Reducing the maximum allowable building height to a level that does not exceed the sites current maximum elevation from sea level (i.e. max height of the existing mounds of dirt on the site or existing buildings where no dirt mounds exist).
• Incorporation of all SBFA/CPA comments to determine and evaluate thresholds for future windsurfing impact.

As a small thank you to everyone who submits comments I’ll send you a cool “Keep Candlestick Windy!!” sticker. To get your sticker just e-mail me with your name address and the date you submitted your comments at: dsiskind2@gmail.com.

Please send your written comments on the Draft EIR before 11/22 to:

Thank you for the info, but would also be possible to ask to dynamite the present building complex on the south side of the hill. That one did not change the # of days/year but for sure ruined the wind pattern close to shore.

And ... as much as I love trees it would be nice to trim everything upwind ... who's up for some midnight gardening? Shocked

Of greater worry will there even be parking access.
Or access at all?
Discussions among the regulars have brought this
up as a question.
Some who have looked at the plan say there is none and
they want to put the launch near the beach at the entrance where
there is no wind was one of the things I heard.

there are several projects potentially impacting candlestick. the answer to your question is probably in one of the sites or documents below:

- brisbane baylands is 700 acres upwind and could potentially interfere with the alemany gap wind source much like the various wind shadows such as the current recology building do presently. it could also increase the odor or other air pollution (recology wants to do a 4x size expansion to 1 million square feet biomass (compost) processing and lots of warehouses mean more diesel trips and emissions). more info is available here:

http://www.ci.brisbane.ca.us/baylands-information

- candlestick point / hunters point is adjacent to the launch and will involve reworking the park and possibly providing or eliminating parking. more information is available in the recreation section of the eir:

http://www.sf-planning.org/modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=310

or in other sections here (scroll down to candlestick point):

http://www.sf-planning.org/index.aspx?page=1828

- executive park on the south side of bottom of bayview hill just west and north of the launch. buildings have already been constructed here but additional 6 to 16 story buildings have been approved. that would apparently include moving up the hill in a terraced fashion. in any event, despite whatever impact this has or will have, they have already gone through the eir process so it would be difficult to push for much change:
