to the guy who likes to jump in the water instead of slogging: where I sail there are sharks and while I'm not unreasonably scared of them, I don't like just floating around waiting for one to sample my legs or feet.

Our sturgeons run almost as big as tiger sharks, but they don't bite. Smile
That would change my tune altogether.

I have to say that backwind is only better if it is a short space, like the Eddie section on a flood in rio, or the Palo Alto channel. Too many tacks in a short distance is not as efficient as back winding , over a longer distance I think tacking is still better. Second it is possible to plane through a tack if the board is going down hill, off shore wind and on shore waves! I can get to the new side on a full plane on 75 liters and I am 200 lbs. It takes practice, learning to go early to the new side, and falling Towards your back winded sail to finish through the eye of the wind.
