the wide brim hats do offer some ear protection from the sun, the sides may stay kinda horizontal , really doubt the front, a helmet IMO is much better
Local Russian sailor has a ball cap bill Velcro ed to his helmet for eye sun screen use. _________________ K4 fins

Mike Doyle makes a "100mph Hat" that looks totally awesome, but when I inquired it was $60., too steep for me, seems like a rip-off.

Spennie, the Doyle hat is definitely interesting and seems up to the task. Thanks for posting. |

Patagonia makes a surfer hat called the Duck Hat or something like that. After 2 years of wearing it I like it for normal windsurfing. If doing light wind or teaching, then I wear a larger Columbia hat. The Patagonia hat has a neoprene strap that goes around your ears and connects under your neck. It isn't coming off....
But my wife says I look like Mary Poppins. So choose carefully...... |

The Ultimate Hat was really good, much like some of the others. All cotton, but a stiff brim to keep the sun off. They had a lifetime warrantee which I took advantage of when my original hat wore out after several years. However, they originated in Florida and were made there, but apparently they now moved manufacturing to China and the product is not nearly as good. Fine, but not like the original.

I like the Dakine Surf Cap. Yes you have to put sun block on the neck but the cap covers the ears and ....it stays on when getting washed in the waves. Cheap too at about $ 20 .
