Well this is more thought provoking than I expected.
I was in some way poking fun at all of us given the recent threads on the safety gear topics.

First I have complete respect for all and please do what ever you need to protect your self and others while participating in such a great past time.
At one point in time or another I have been know to
wear a helmet
sunglasses or goggles
Booties which I absolutely hate to wear but do in cold water or if I am in a location that shreds feet.
A hat for sun protection
Have not yet found the need for an impact vest but would consider it at times

I have also suffered injuries as I would guess many have.. Some of which may have been minimized or prevented with some added protection.

Some added thoughts on the mind set for using safety gear
To me there is a progression in the need for these.

There are things we use to prevent obvious injury or immediate pain.
Wearing a wet suit for cold water and or air for example
Sunscreen to prevent a sun burn etc

I feel that the analogy for skiing and snowboarding make most of the gear used today for these sports in the obvious injury category. It is cold, speeds are much greater than most recreational windsurfing and surfaces and obstacles are clearly harder

There are things we wear to prevent possible injury or danger
Helmets, impact or flotation vests
some of these protective measures are more likely than others to be useful given ones sailing conditions, location and discipline.

There are things that we wear to prevent long term injuries or degradation
sun protection clothing hats etc
Ear protection for cold water surfers ear
Eye protection from the sun.

To me all of this stuff numbs the carefree experience. It does not make it any less enjoyable. In fact these devices can make it possible.

Exactly how I feel.

There's a line of text near the end of Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, and I'm paraphrasing here, but the Author
says that "when you remove your helmet, it's amazing how much more
you can see and feel." Interesting allegory to life.

I suppose we need to be serious.

One of the troublesome things about getting old is that you still think as when in your prime, and have difficulty balancing such against the inevitable loss of strength and endurance needed in surf. You want, and NEED to be in it because experience tells you 'of course you can cope', but common sense says - just hold on there, you're not quite as you used to be!

Also, past 'nasties' start to take on a bit more prominence. We all have some! Mine include, hospitalisation from close call drowning (in big-headed stage), smack on head from board and concussion (big smack down), cracked rib from front of board (ditto), and fin-gash across scalp again needing hospital treatment.

Consequently I now wear kayak buoyancy aid and helmet, anywhere near surf. I also avoid too gnarly now, not being ready to be taken by the law of averages, and neither is injury, and lay off an option anymore. What would that be proving?

Most WSers I know have cracked a rib at least once, not even including jumping. I've cracked 'em maybe three times and am certain my body armor has prevented a few more. My last cracked rib cost me a trip to the ER to be sure I would live through the night (i.e, to check for spleen or liver damage). The doc said I was very wise to do so. I'm done cracking ribs. It costs way too much playtime, yet all it takes is falling onto the boom.

My present armor ENHANCES the carefree experience. ... thus the blown-out knee. Sad

Life is either daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.

just a thought...

But she couldn't see if she was walking off a cliff, or hear the warning if it was being shouted at her.
