|

As yet another late season "storm" passes over us, bringing much needed precipitation of course, but nothing like the flooding of biblical proportions we would need to raise our lake to a safe sailing level, I have to finally admit that it won't happen this spring.
Yes, a few of us die-hards are still sailing here, but the Ghetto is inop altogether due to islands and trees, and the two remaining venues near the AuxDam are awfully short, hemmed in by obstacles, and constantly threatened by emerging mudflats, since inspite recent rains, the lake continues to drop, due to water demands in the San Joaquim Valley.
So very sorry! Be well, and pray for an El Niņo this fall, so we can have a 2015 Lake Isabella Speed Week.
In the meantime, Jurg and Kevin are poised to step up and put on a speed event at Cabrillo - stay tuned!
Eva

I am sorry to see our freshwater friends hurting. However, I just checked Mammoth snow totals and they appear to be 2/3 of last years. And importantly, there is more Sierra snow forecast this weekend.
After that, it looks like we are headed for a mega heat wave. I'm guessing the lake will get some extra water over the next 4 weeks. I hope so!

We are at 2535.25ft elevation this morning. For last year's Speed Week, we were at 2548ft elevation, which was ok. Not great, but ok.
We have 8.6" of snow water equivalent on our watershed this morning (32% of normal for this date). If they closed the outflow altogether and dumped all of that water into our lake right now, it would rise about 5ft. We need at least 10ft to put those trees safely under.
And unfortunately, every time there has been meaningful inflow this spring, the outflow has been adjusted to keep the lake even, or even slightly declining.
So, no, I'm afraid, water prospects are dismal for us, even if we get a bit more precip out of tonight's "slight chance of showers"
I so hate to be negative, but this is truly depressing!

Hey Eva, while the water's so low, why don't you run out there with a chainsaw & cut those trees off at the waterline?!! Better still, wait until August.
I wonder if that's possible, send the locals out there with the promise of free firewood. Not a bad idea, I wonder if the Forest Service would allow that to happen, in the name of future safety?
Drunken rednecks in boats with chainsaws, what could possibly go wrong?

those trees were left in place expressly in order to provide fish habitat. In the past, any attempts to remove them, was met with a huge public outcry

Lopez old timers tell of time when they worked with park rangers to remove a dead fallen tree exposed by low water on the edge of the sailing area. They cut it into large chunks and drug it by tractor out of the water area. Fishing folks saw it, notified several gov agencies, and soon the tractor was pulling the tree pieces back into the original location, all with a team of gov onlookers to insure it was done right. Chains and attachments were even added to prevent movement with changing water levels. Word was no further movement of fish habitat without vast amounts of paperwork, public review, studies, reports, permits, budget allocation, etc... which means forget it.

BACK TO THE COAST!!!!
As the lakes continue to shrink, the ocean levels are rising pretty fast,,,, according to some.
