I sail mostly on lakes in a mild wind on 135L Shark, biggest sail is 7.5 Gator, and sometimes it's not enough.
I'm looking for a larger sail. Gator's line stops at 8.0. Severne 8.5 Convert or 8.6 Turbo should be compatible with my Severne 460 mast, but perhaps I should go to 9.0-9.2.
For 9.0 NCX or 9.2 Turbo I would need a new mast.
Appreciate any comments or suggestions! |

Hey Andreia,
Well let's first start off with your weight and wind conditions? Also what size fin are you using on the 135L shark? (Width of board?)

Yes, your weight. Unless you are a very small person there will not be much gain between an 8.6 & 9.2 meter sail.

You're going to need to go at least a full meter bigger to get much advantage, which for you means 8.5 or larger. Unfortunately that big a sail is going to require a bigger 490 mast as well.
I'd recommend the Sailworks Retro, it's a no-cam freeride sail with amazing range -- you'll be able to use it in a wide variety of conditions with some re-tuning, or better still, an adjustable outhaul. _________________ Spennie the Wind Junkie

Actually not. An 8.5 Severne Convert is designed for his 460 mast.

Didn't know that, you're correct of course, but the luff measures 494, so you need to add 34 cm. of extension, making the bottom 18"- 2' of mast totally rigid. If it's designed that way, fine, you'll save buying a new mast. _________________ Spennie the Wind Junkie

AndreiA,
Going smaller and having fun with light wind freestyle could be a solution. Actually when it is not enough for 7.5 I'm learning the tricks without changing the sail. Just too lazy, plus on the lake never know when it's going to pick up again. Though, it took me long with 7.5 cammed sail to learn helitacks, 360s etc.

Yep, starting from a 7.5 you need at least 8.5, better 9.0, although it depends on your weight. The Turbo 8.6 might be enough, with the twin cam, but I agree with one of the comments: it might be fun to just take out your shark with a 5.0 when the wind is not enough. I started to do that my my isonic, instead of rigging my 8.0, and I am surprised how fun it can be. |

Guys, thank you for comments!
My weight is 73kg. I'm using a standard 48cm fin on Shark 135L board.
I like doing light wind with 5.0 sail, sometimes taking out my 190L Fanatic Viper.
However, a couple of weeks ago I had interesting experience in Bonaire. Wind was down, and I was trying to plain on 130L Exoset TWIXX with 8.0 Severne Gator. It was not enough, but I thought the sail wasn't properly tuned (not enough downhall). So I simply asked for 8.5 -- Severne Convert.
Surprisingly, there was a huge difference and was able to plain most of the time on this 8.5!
The bottom line: sometimes, a little bit extra will set you off, therefore I decided to add one more sail to my set.
The question is, should it be cam sail 8.6 Turbo, or camless 8.5 Convert? |

my windsurf buddy has a Hawk 135
his favourite sail is the 7.5 on this board
the board and 48 cm fin handles his 8.5 well
his skills for waterstarting with the 8.5 make him dislike the sail size a bit
he is a SW Retro fan and has 7.0, 7.5 and 8.5
he is much heavier than you at 100+ kilos
i too am 100+ kilos and use an AHD FF 160
my sails are Maui Sails typically and i use 7.0, 8.0 and 8.4 with this board
the 8.0 is NOT cambered and the 8.4 is a full on TR race sail
the race sail is impossible to uphaul with the wide luff full of water
and my skills are lacking for water starting it
so, when choppier and wilder, i use the old, abused 8-oh
the good news is - the Turbo is a 2-cam free-race sail
i use bigger sails in lighter winds - water usually flatter and prefer cambers
remember , cambered sails weigh a little more
will you be comfortable water starting it ??
if not, you will be uphauling a heavy sail
it is not an easy call and as you see, i like to have one of each for now |
