Visiting from Northern California and looking for sailing options and gear rentals. Local knowledge appreciated...Yesterday as windy everywhere. Did anyone sail, if so where?

Oh you hit a nerve with this post... my parents used to take me to N. Myrtle Beach, Cherry Grove, as a kid. I would drag my windsurfing stuff and wait for the afternoon thermal winds. I broke plenty of equipment in the surf at that beach.... apparently there are some kiteboarders who regularly launch from the north end of Cherry Grove. I never was smart enough to figure out it would have been much easier to launch in the cut of the beach to get out past the surf, plus my folks would have freaked if I had sailed on the other side of the cut where they couldn't get to that beach.
I agree with Keith that Hatteras is THE PLACE to go if you can get there. If not, I would suggest looking at this map:
Google Map of NC Windsurfing Spots
I am not aware of any shops that are renting equipment near Myrtle Beach, the closest rentals might be Hatteras, but others may know.
Another good resource for more information is Triangle Boardsailing Club
Good luck getting out on the water.

Thanks for the responses and the intel... yeah, I have heard of Hatteras...gonna check out N Carolina next time and will maybe get lucky. I checked with some locals and they said there is no place to rent windsurfing gear near where I stayed any more. There were a couple windy days, 3/31 and 4/3 would have been very sailable but alas could not get my hands on some gear.....Still had a great time hangin out on the South Carolina Coast...
Back in CA now and gearing up for the season! If you are ever in Northern California, check out Sherman Island....
Delta Dawgs signing off...
