I have board which can be used as single or three-fin. In single fin mode board feels great: fast, maneuverable, really turns on dime.
Three fin mode changes board completely. "Normal" stance doesn't work anymore. I have to stay more up right, drive on front foot. But what most bother me I seams to loosing ability to make sharp instant changes direction. Board doesn't "want to turn". No problem with jibes, but it jibes differently. What I'm doing wrong?

I am not an expert on this, but my guess would be that you are using
front fins that are too large, too stiff, or that your grouping is too
far apart.

I love my thruster fin Hi-Tech, but I'm about to embark on a Quad
journey (in about a month), in which I'm sure I'll have similar
questions to yours, as I run it Quad, tri, and single finned
(could be like owning 3 different boards without having to
carry them all in my van). ;*)

OK, that wouldn't change my advise.

I've been using Open Ocean Tri-fins for many years, but the concept is based on using a normal sized center fin and smaller sized canted thrusters. From my experiences in surfing, when you get into smaller fin clusters maneuverability goes up, but so does a more slidey, less positive character. Sailing style and stance can often overcome problems with tracking, and it can also be done to some degree with larger fins.

For me, outside of the OO Tri-fin arrangement, I'm sticking with the basic single fin concept. I have to say though, I'm not a dedicated wave sailor. Over time, I'd like to hear the feedback that many B&J sailors have to say about tri-fins, twins and quads outside of wave conditions. From what I've gleaned up to now, defining your fin choices can be a more costly can of worms. The trend is certainly a boon for fin manufacturers.

I recently started sailing a quad after only sailing single fins since i started sailing in the 80s. I have been sailing quite a lot on a freestyle board with a small fin that makes it impossible to ride unless being really gentle on the back foot.
I donīt know if that helped or what but i didnīt experience any trouble with the transition from single to quad. -but come to think of it iīm probably sailing it with a more of the freestyle stance but still able to put much more back foot pressure then on my freestyle. -so perhaps itīs a matter of fine tuning fin position and size?

I didn't mention board from beginning because when I demoed RRD firewave 102 I felt absolutely same way, so I think it is general trend.
... but if you insist board is 2013 Fanatic FW 95.

starki33, I didn't catch whether your comments relate to wavesailing or just bashing around, but it's worth remembering that, but for Gorge-type conditions, tri's and quads are intended for wave sailing or at least leaning in that direction. Your sense that the tri setup feels more front-foot dominated makes perfect sense given the design's intention to respond best on a bottom turn with driving coming from the front foot.

Maybe lengthening your harness lines will help stand the rig more upright and get you better balanced on the board. Or, a gross adjustment would be to move your front footstrap (or both) back to even out the pressure. I'd start with harness lines and see how that goes.

I think your board has slotbox and US box..2013 ?
I would adjust the cluster as close as possible ..
A fri fin is NOT going to be as fast as a single.they will have more area thus more drag..overall slower to plane and slower.. if it doesn't. Go upwjnd better or turn better than as a single
SOMETHING. IS WRONG

For you to think all MULTI FJNS..2 3 OR 4. WILL sail with similar characteristics ..
Wrong..same as not all singles are the same
