|
|
I really like my new Sailworks Revo's, but when they say "rigs on a 430 mast", they really mean it. I can almost get my 5.4 to rig on my 400 mast, but I'm about 10 cm short. A mast tip extension would be the perfect solution, but I'm really having trouble finding one. BTW, I'm sailing the Chinook 90 RDM masts. Let me know if anyone has a source of something that'll work. _________________ Kansas City |

About 4", tape a wooden dowell atop the tip of your mast. |

How about a cheap name brand low milage RDM 430 from Mau for maybe $100 and $35 shipping.
I can arrange that at Kanaha for a home boy in KC. |

A longer base extension has several problems:
1. more expensive than the $20 solution I'm looking for.
2. It changes the reference line where I normally mount the boom, which is a very minor inconvenience but inconvenient nonetheless.
I have been thinking about doing this for a while, but it would be about $250-$300* to get all new mast extensions.
*I'd want to replace all three of my extensions with the same kind all at the same time. _________________ Kansas City |

Over the years I've broken two tip extensions and cracked one other, I learned my lesson and I will never use them again. You'd be surprised at how much pressure is applied at the tip of the mast during a gust.
You only go around once in life, as far as we know, spend some money. |

You can make lightweight strong ones from a discarded mast top.
Just cut around 2', place at down the tip of your mast by a foot, cut till it's somewhat tight, measure again, and cut a ring to epoxy on the mast tip, around 5" down from the tip. Use the rest as the extender. |

I have a one or maybe even two, but they were designed in the 80s when masts had much bigger tip diameters. If you have broken mast base section hanging around, you might try making a custom fixed length base extension. You can buy one retail, but they would like be just a expensive as an adjustable mast extension.
You were saying that you're about 10cm short using a 400cm mast. What length mast extension are you currently using today? |

Some thoughts from somebody who has gone the mast tip extension route:
1. Putting an extension on the tip and leaving it there (ie permanently extending the length of the mase) is a lot easier than putting the tip on and removing it when you want the original length.
2. There's an excellent chance of breaking the tip of your mast.
Thoughts from just another windsurfer:
Your reasons to not buy a longer extension are not great.
-Measure the base to boom distance with a tape measure and transfer it to your new rig. This will be much less work than dealing with a mast tip extension.
-If you're fussy enough about your rigging that you like to have an extension for every sail (and you like them all the same) then take the $250-300 and buy a 430 mast. You can get one for less than that. Your sail will rig properly, it will be convenient, and you'll have a 430 mast.

Thanks for all the input. I'll figure this out soon, but I'm leaning toward new extensions. _________________ Kansas City |
