|

My family has a summer beach house which has water/bay access (about 2 to 3 foot deep off the bulkhead) with no place to rig the sail but a stone road (which may cause damage to the sail). My question is what would stop me from rigging the sail in the water? Would I cause any damage to the sail/rig? Would it not rig properly in the water? Thanks in advance for your thoughts! |

If you or your sail don't get run over I'd rig in the road. I've seen people rig up on the railroad tracks and places other than green grass but not in the water. If it's shallow with zero waves you may be good. |

Maybe you can put a large tarp down. Secure it with a sail bag or a boom upwind. |

A little bit of road rash never hurt a sail, at least w/in the first 50 times you rig it there. Many people rig their sails in parking lots as standard procedure, so don't sweat it, concentrate on the sailing and how you're rigging it, not so much where.
You usually have to sit on your butt to get the proper amount of downhaul, would you like to do that in the water? I don't think so. |

in the winter i have rigged inside the chalet
small up to the 7-oh went out the door without adjustment
larger sails could NOT have boom set to full length
also, most chalets have a large enough deck area
or rig on neighbour's lawn , etc
there is always a better place than in the water .... |

Don't rig in the water. It's a recipe for losing parts. Plus, you need to be able to sit down to tension the dowhaul and you need to have the sail out of the water to evaluate how it's rigged.
If you rig in the street, I suggest you put down a carpet or tarp first. Asphalt will shred your sail if you drag it on the road (inevitable) and it will rip up your boom grip.

If you are like me, at my cabin in the summer, I usually leave it rigged for a few days. Take extra precaution when rigging on the stones , the water as aid has the recipe for other misadventure.
hard to fathom that somewhere there is not enough room on land to rig..

If you have a board bag open it up & use that to rig on, it will at least keep your boom from getting road rash. Water rigging sounds difficult. |

Rig on a shrub, or a patch of weeds, or an old junk sail, or a plastic tarp. Heck, I once caught some self-centered SOB deliberately rigging on my rigged sail on the Hatchery gravel. I suggest you don't do that, but anything else will help prevent the wear others mention. |

You only have to sit to set downhaul if you don't use a crank.
It is the main benefit of cranks.
You can kneel to set tension and see the sail better.
Thommen rigs his sails while standing up with little effort. |
