It's 28 gusting to 32, from the WSW, right now, at 7:54AM at M-14.
Why would the windmills only effect the wind some of the time?
Is it random? |

No, it's directional. WSW right now, coming straight up the river & missing the windmills. Any south in it will do this, not sure about due west. Any north and it hits the windmills before the water at 14. _________________ Spennie the Wind Junkie

Using Google maps with the satellite function you can see that due west of the southernmost hill runs right through The Sign. Due west of the southernmost Windmill runs right through the middle of Rio Viento RV Park. The hills create turbulence and obviously the windmills as well. Any W, WNW, NW or N wind must travel over & through hills & windmills so you will get turbulence at the Sign, Marker 14 & Power Lines. There can be no discussion of if there is turbulence at Power Lines or the Sign on any wind from W to N, there can only be discursion on how much more turbulence the windmills have created.
The WNW line appears to run right through Little Baja. The County Park doesn’t appear to get any turbulence until the wind clocks NW. This is not science, just observation assuming the Google map is correctly oriented west to north.
As for the amount of south or north wind today compared to the past I take into account that the climate would be changing with or without us. I’m not saying we don’t have a cause in the change, just saying it would be ignorant to assume that the weather/wind will remain the same forever. Just like investing in stocks or mutual funds, success of the past may be a strong indicator of future, but it is no guarantee.

I agree with much of what Coachg writes. There is a topography driven flow detachment that reconnects right about at the sign for most wind directions we like, ~SSW to W. We saw real evidence of that during the Collinsville grass fires. This is why, in my historical experience, the wind was always better upwind or downwind of the sign. We went there for swell, primarily. Now it is out of habit. Simulation still not ready.
Was the powerlines any good last Friday? I know of only one person who went there and they said it was great. |

@Spennie,
Why do you say "no".
I stated WSW, which is what you stated.
And, yes, the direction, WSW, is having exactly the effect that I have been saying since the beginning of this thread.
It's not about the windmills. It's about the direction of the wind.
And as I have been saying, when the wind has a S component in it M-14 gets wind. When it has a N component it does not. And, yes, the windmills probably effect the W - N winds. But down at M-14 those directions are usually not that good with or without the windmills.
I have noticed that the farther E you go, towards Powerlines, and beyond the direction and perhaps the windmills have a greater effect. |

@CoachG,
I think the point is that there is climate change happening and there has been a shift in the prevailing winds on the River which has been having a more N component for a couple of years, than it use to.
As I see it, it doesn't really matter, at least to me, if it is a man made switch, a switch made by Mother Nature, or a switch made by Budda or Vishnu.
There has been a lot of WNW days which does not favor M-14. |

@jroberts,
Friday had a huge amount of S component which would probably explain Powerlines being great. |

Looking at yesterdays (7/1) wind graphs for M10 and M14 the wind at M10 was much more consistent whereas the wind at M14 was up and down. Was this due to the windmills, wind direction or both? |

Looking at Google maps satellite image I would say it was the windmills, but it looks to me like the windmill's disturbance just clipped the Marker, and it may have been fine one reach upwind. Not there, yet, so can't say for sure. Anyone who was? _________________ Spennie the Wind Junkie
