For me, it was Mike Zajicek's classic 8'10" Mike's Lab slalom boards. My first one was a 1990 model I bought used, and I followed it up with a new leading edge 1993 model with the wide point back. My last was a new late 1999 model weighing in at about 11.5 pounds. These boards did it all with such speed and style that was so surprisingly comfortable and fun for the average guy. I still have them all, plus others, and I'm still regularly using the 1999 model. It could be argued that these boards weren't freeride boards, but it must be remembered that the "freeride" niche didn't exist back then. They were my go to "magic carpet ride" at the very heart of my quiver.

Dark purple E-Rocks were 2.5 lbs. lighter in weight, as almost as durable.
You remember ZackBeekler and BobHuberman, they raced those Bics against the Slabs, Thommens, and all the World Cup pros, and did well for themselves.

Although I think mine may have been a 2004. Anyway, I really enjoyed that board. Not super fast, but turned really well, planed up early, and had a fairly wide tail for easy jumping. Sailed that thing in bump 'n jump and wave conditions and it was a lot of fun for both. The deck eventually disintegrated between the front and rear footstraps.

< 20 mph? Any lawn chair or SUP, unless there are waves.
25 with some swell or waves? Any fast wave board* of 72-85L (depending on wind quality) that steers off the back foot.
Flat water and any amount of wind? That lawn chair, unless someone else wants to rig, carry everything to the water for me, get my wet suit off my ankles after I'm done, put my gear away, and have some good food waiting.
* If it's choppy (e.g., Gorge), I want a traditional wave board, not a flat, bouncy Stubbie.
Am I too picky? Hell, yes. So? After all, it's MY fun, not someone else's, at stake.

The first place I check on a used board and the second place I pad once I buy ANY board. (First is the nose, third is in front of the front straps.)

Fanatic Eagle 114.
Check out http://miami.craigslist.org/pbc/spo/4517801005.html.
I'm selling mine cheap. It's the best freeride board I've ever had in that size, but I switched to a freestyle wave board in that size.
Before that it was the F2 279.
