Why do people insist on parking in the lower area where many people rig/launch/land their windsurfers and kites? Especially, when there is plenty of parking above? Is it really that hard to carry your equipment 50'? The lower lot was nice and clear when I rigged and launched this morning but when I returned there was barely anywhere to land my kite. Yes, I could of landed at the cove but why should I have to? I've seen both kiters and windsurfers park there. What gives? Is it just me who thinks people shouldn't park there (kiters or windsurfers)? No, I did not say anything to anyone I prefer the passive aggressive approach.

I understand what you're saying, but is there a "No Parking, this is a Kite
Launching and Landing Area Only" sign there?

I guess what I'm really saying is, not everyone will recognize or
even understand, the "decent" thing to do. If it really irritates you,
you're going to have to get together with the locals in a tribal sort of way,
and at least develop and distribute some rules (but that sounds like beach mayhem to me)

I doubt posting here will have any effect.

Well people been parking there for 20+ years, and its legal. Wait till you get an angry drunk fisherman who hates any and every one, windsurfers and kiters alike.

There isn't a no parking sign, which is why I don't say anything directly to anyone who parks there because they do have the right to. It just surprises me that people choose to park in prime rigging area. I understand fishermen parking there because I don't expect them to give a crap about windsurfers or kiters. Guess I just wanted to vent.

Hey skent, get with the program. You have vented what, 2 times since 2000? You gotta get your vent-count up brah.

As far as Rufus, it used to be a fun place to windsurf. Last time I went there I got beaned on the head with a kite. And I was sitting on the beach. I figure let the kiters have Rufus, and we get the Wall.

scottwerden two similar posts in 14 years doesn't sound too bad to me. I'm not venting about windsurfers and kiters on the water just the parking/rigging situation. I just think it would benefit both windsurfers and kiters to have that area to rig.

To answer your question I do think it is just you.
However, you are definitely leading with your chin on this forum to complain about anything kiter related at Rufus. I feel like I have rolled into Lake Havasu now with all the kiters with their Winnebagos, trailers, jet skis, etc. Kiters seem to value camaraderie and congestion over peace and solitude. They are a different breed than me, for sure. And, as to the cove, I wish my kids could go play there and not worry about the kites (maybe I just worry about the kites). Kite on.

BTW- I can land my windsurfer in about a 2' patch of waterfront, granted it may take a 10' wide swath of ground for me to get to me car and de-rig.

Ditto. For me, Rufus has long been my favorite sailing spot of all the 70+ venues I've sailed on the Columbia. No mas. It's been destroyed, IMO, by the sheer numbers and footprint of kites there and the attitudes and behavior of the 10 percenters. There's simply not enough room on the river there to sail unimpeded anymore.

You guys will be happy when I remind you that 80% of the traffic at the river will be gone at Labor Day. Unfortunately, 88% of the sailable days are gone as well. We have all had days when every swell is occupied and people behave as if their patch of real estate needs to be guarded with their lives. Just makes me more grateful for the days when I am out there with just a handful of people having a blast.

I'm dumbfounded! We have been parking there since the eighties, get over it.
